Chapter 9: Infiltration at Dawn

The sky above the Vance estate was beginning to streak with the pale, bruised purple of early dawn when Julian’s rented car pulled quietly into the dense treeline bordering the western edge of the property. The persistent drizzle had cleared, leaving behind a thick, swirling ground fog that swallowed the lower halves of the manicured hedges and cast an eerie, spectral silence over the grand mansion.
Julian checked his watch: 5:14 AM. The security shift change typically occurred at 5:30 AM, providing a critical fourteen-minute window where the exterior patrols would be momentarily unmanned while the incoming guards signed off in the main security bunker.
He gripped the heavy iron ring of skeleton keys Mrs. Gable had provided, feeling their cold, jagged edges bite into his palm. He wore dark, non-descript clothing instead of his ruined tuxedo, blending seamlessly into the shadowy fog. Leaving Clara safely sleeping under the protective care of Marcus Sterling had been difficult, but it was the only way to ensure her safety while he secured the digital smoking gun.
Moving with practiced stealth, Julian slipped past the perimeter fence through the same loose section of ironwork he had used hours earlier. The wet grass whispered against his boots as he navigated the rear gardens, avoiding the open gravel paths where motion sensors were buried beneath the soil.
He reached the servants' entrance—a heavily paneled oak door tucked away beneath an ivy-covered archway that led directly down into the basement buttery. Selecting the smallest, most rusted key from Mrs. Gable’s ring, he inserted it into the stubborn brass lock. With a quiet, satisfying click, the internal tumbler gave way.
Julian slipped inside, pulling the heavy door shut behind him and plunging into the familiar, damp darkness of the basement. The air smelled of old stone, damp earth, and distant bleach. He moved swiftly up the stone stairs, his hand sliding along the familiar wooden handrail until he reached the private residential wing.
The Vance manor was dead silent. The crystalline chandeliers overhead were unlit, casting long, geometric shadows across the deserted hallways. Julian made his way toward his private study on the second floor—the very room where Eleanor had attacked him with the brass poker just hours before.
He reached the heavy mahogany double doors, pressing his ear against the wood. Complete silence. He inserted his personal key into the deadbolt, turning it with absolute silence. The door swung inward, revealing the dim interior of the library, smelling faintly of dying embers and scattered papers.
Julian moved directly toward the antique grandfather clock standing in the corner of the room. He swung open its heavy wooden face, revealing a concealed digital keypad built into the clockwork mechanism. This was the master access point to the Vance holding server.
His fingers danced across the numeric pad, punching in the sixteen-digit encryption sequence he had memorized years ago. The green LED light flickered, then flashed solid blue, indicating access granted. A small USB port popped out from the side of the clock face. Julian pulled a small, black flash drive from his pocket and inserted it firmly into the port.
A progress bar appeared on the tiny screen: Downloading encrypted archive... 15%... 30%...
Suddenly, the overhead library lights clicked on with a sharp, blinding snap.

"I wondered when you'd return to the scene of your betrayal, Julian," Eleanor’s voice rang out, cold and razor-sharp, from the doorway.
Julian spun around. Eleanor stood blocking the exit, impeccably dressed in a tailored velvet pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a severe updo. In her right hand, she held a small, sleek black revolver, pointed with terrifying steadiness directly at his chest.
