Chapter 5: Flight Through the Manor

The labyrinth of the Vance estate was a living, breathing maze that favored those who knew its darkest secrets. Julian pulled Clara relentlessly through the suffocating gloom, their footsteps echoing against the damp masonry. Behind them, the distant sound of heavy doors slamming and Eleanor’s shrill commands ricocheted through the ventilation shafts. Security guards, loyal only to the Vance payroll, had been mobilized.

"Keep moving, Clara. Don't look back," Julian urged, his chest heaving as adrenaline flooded his bloodstream. The silver ring on his finger felt heavy, a burning brand against his skin.

They emerged from the service shaft into the subterranean wine cellars, a vast, subterranean cavern lined with thousands of bottles of vintage Bordeaux resting in damp wooden racks. The air was thick with the scent of aged oak and fermenting grapes. They ducked behind a massive oak wine cask just as the heavy iron-studded door at the top of the stone stairs swung open, casting a long beam of a flashlight across the floor.

"Check the perimeter! Lady Eleanor wants them found immediately," a gruff security voice commanded. Heavy boots crunched on the gravel-strewn floor, the light sweeping dangerously close to their hiding spot.

Clara pressed her face tightly into Julian’s side, her small frame trembling violently. Julian wrapped his arm around her shoulders, his hand coming into contact with the pearl necklace she still clutched in her pocket. He realized they could not stay underground. The cellars were a dead end; the only exit led to the courtyard, which would be heavily guarded.

They needed an ally outside the estate.

When the beam of the flashlight swung away toward the far corner of the cellar, Julian nudged Clara forward. "Quietly," he whispered. They slipped toward the loading bay doors, a heavy set of iron-clad wooden panels used for receiving seasonal stock. Julian remembered an old, unrecorded latch behind the decorative ivy on the exterior wall—a mechanical flaw the estate manager had neglected to fix for a decade.

With a silent prayer, Julian threw his weight against the rusted iron bolt. It groaned, a loud, metallic shriek that echoed off the vaulted brick ceiling.

"Over there! Someone's by the loading doors!" a shout rang out from across the cellar.

With a final, desperate heave, Julian forced the latch open just as a flashlight beam locked onto them. Cool, damp night air rushed into the cellar, carrying the scent of rain-soaked earth. Julian shoved Clara out into the darkness of the overgrown garden, diving through the narrow gap himself just as a heavy security boot kicked the door shut behind them.
