Chapter 11: The Takedown

The chaotic blur of the library raid unfolded with terrifying precision. Federal marshals and local precinct detectives swarmed the room, disarming Eleanor before she could fire a second shot. As iron handcuffs clicked sharply around her slender wrists, Eleanor offered no resistance; her cold, calculated composure had finally fractured entirely, replaced by a dull, unseeing stare fixed on the polished mahogany floor.
Marcus Sterling stepped past the restrained woman, walking directly toward Julian, who was pulling himself up from the Persian rug, clutching the black USB drive tightly in his fist. Marcus extended a steady hand, helping Julian to his feet and inspecting his uninjured shoulder where the bullet had grazed his shirt.
"Are you intact, my boy?" Marcus asked quietly.
Julian nodded, exhaling a long, shaky breath that released hours of pent-up adrenaline. He held up the small flash drive between his thumb and forefinger. "The entire archive is here. Every offshore account, every forged deed, every payoff receipt from the night of the coup."
"Then the Vance empire has officially fallen," Marcus said, looking around the opulent library with a sense of profound closure. "The state prosecutor's office has already issued warrants for the remaining board members who participated in the cover-up. It's over, Julian."
As Eleanor was led past them in handcuffs, her head held high with a lingering vestige of aristocratic pride, she paused for a fraction of a second, locking eyes with her husband. There was no plea for forgiveness, no anger left—only a chilling warning in her gaze. "You think you've won, Julian," she whispered as officers guided her toward the doorway. "But an empire like this doesn't just vanish because the queen is caged. The others will protect their own."
Julian watched her disappear down the corridor, feeling a cold shiver run down his spine. He knew Eleanor was right; the web of corruption extended far beyond just his wife and her deceased father. Powerful politicians, corporate partners, and international financiers were all deeply implicated in the Alistair purge. Bringing down Eleanor was only the first battle in a much larger war for absolute truth.
Marcus placed a reassuring hand on Julian’s shoulder. "Don't dwell on her threats, Julian. We have the evidence, we have the legal backing, and most importantly, we have the rightful heir."
Julian’s expression softened at the mention of Clara. The memory of the little girl’s tear-filled eyes in the grand ballroom felt like a lifetime ago. "How is she?"

"Resting peacefully," Marcus replied with a warm smile. "Mrs. Gable has made her pancakes, and she's currently playing with a set of wooden building blocks in the study. She asked when you were coming back."
Julian tucked the flash drive securely into his inner pocket, feeling a renewed sense of purpose settle deep within his bones. "Let's go home, Marcus. It's time to give Catherine her birthright back."
