Chapter 13: The Grand Jury

The federal courthouse steps were a swirling vortex of flashing camera bulbs, thrust microphones, and shouting reporters as Julian Vance walked up the stone staircase, holding firmly to Clara’s small hand. Clara wore a simple, elegant white dress—not unlike the one from the night of the gala, but this one was clean, crisp, and fitting for a princess stepping back into the light of history. Marcus Sterling flanked them on the left, his posture tall and unyielding despite his advanced age.
They pushed through the heavy glass doors of the courthouse, entering the cavernous marble atrium that buzzed with the frenetic energy of a historic legal proceeding. The grand jury hearing was about to begin, and the testimony Julian was scheduled to deliver would permanently seal the fate of the Vance empire and officially validate Catherine of Alistair’s royal lineage.
They entered the secure chambers, where twelve jurors sat in quiet anticipation, alongside a panel of federal judges led by Chief Magistrate Vance—a distant cousin of Eleanor’s who had recused himself from the proceedings due to obvious conflicts of interest.
Julian took the witness stand, adjusting the microphone as the ambient murmur of the room died down into absolute silence. He placed his right hand on the heavy leather-bound Bible, took the oath, and looked out across the courtroom. In the back row, seated behind heavy glass partitions, sat Eleanor Vance, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, her hair unstyled, her expression unreadable. She didn't look angry anymore; she looked like a ghost haunting the ruins of her own ambition.
"State your name and relation to the disputed estate," the lead prosecutor commanded clearly.
"My name is Julian Vance," he began, his voice echoing steadily through the chambers. "Former executive partner of Vance Holdings, and witness to the systematic destruction of the House of Alistair."
For the next two hours, Julian laid out the harrowing truth. He detailed the forged medical documents, the midnight coup, the bribery of local officials, and the night Eleanor ripped the pearl necklace from Clara’s neck in the grand ballroom. He presented the cryptographic evidence downloaded from the Vance server, matching transaction IDs directly to the offshore accounts controlled by Eleanor’s late father.

When the prosecutor asked him to identify the rightful heir to the Alistair throne, Julian stepped down from the witness stand, walked over to where Clara sat beside Marcus Sterling, and gently guided the little girl to the front of the courtroom. He lifted her slightly so she could stand tall beside the podium.
"This is Princess Catherine of Alistair," Julian declared, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding conviction. "Rightful heir to the crown, survivor of the purge, and the heart of a new beginning."
