Chapter 8: The Weight of Proof

The silence in the study grew heavy, broken only by the crackle of the coal fire and Clara’s soft, even breathing as she drifted off to sleep under Mrs. Gable’s watchful care. Marcus Sterling placed the engraved pearl back onto the mahogany desk with meticulous care, as if handling fragile glass. He removed his glasses, rubbed his tired eyes, and let out a long, heavy sigh that seemed to carry the weight of a decade of buried guilt.
"I suspected as much," Marcus confessed quietly, replacing his glasses and looking directly at Julian. "When the probate files were rushed through my court ten years ago, the seals were irregular. The signatures didn't match the late Duke's handwriting. But Eleanor’s father held immense political leverage. He threatened my family, Julian. I chose self-preservation over justice, and it is a cowardice I have lived with every single day since."
"You have a chance to redeem yourself now, Marcus," Julian urged, leaning forward across the desk. "We need legal documentation, proof of identity, a formal challenge to the Vance conglomerate's assets. Eleanor controls the board, the accounts, and the police commissioner. If we walk into a standard courtroom without airtight evidence, she will have us locked away in an asylum before sunset."
Marcus nodded slowly, opening a heavy, locked drawer in his desk and pulling out a thick, leather-bound ledger. "I kept my personal journals from that year. Every irregularity, every bribe offered, every forged document I was forced to look past. I knew the truth would eventually surface. I just prayed I would live long enough to see it happen."
He flipped open the ledger to a yellowed page filled with dense, hurried handwriting. "But documents alone won't suffice. The burden of proof for royal lineage requires biometric verification—DNA comparison with the royal crypt's remains, or a witness who can legally attest to the birth marks and lineage."
"Clara has the pearl," Julian pointed out. "And I can provide the financial trail linking Eleanor's father directly to the buyout of the Alistair estate accounts. I have the master encryption keys to the Vance holding server in my private office safe."
"Your office safe?" Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Julian, that safe is inside the Vance manor. Going back there is walking directly into a lion's den. Eleanor will have patrols watching every entrance."
"It's the only way," Julian said resolutely. "If we want to dismantle her empire legally and permanently, we need the financial ledger stored on that server. It details every transaction, every payoff, and every suppressed document from the night of the coup."
Marcus studied Julian’s face for a long moment, searching for any sign of hesitation. Finding none, the retired judge nodded slowly. "Very well. But you cannot go alone. You need someone who knows the estate's security blind spots as well as you do."

A soft knock interrupted their planning. The heavy study door creaked open, and Mrs. Gable stepped inside, holding a folded wool coat and a heavy iron ring of skeleton keys.
"If you're going back into that house, Mr. Julian," the elderly housekeeper said with a quiet, fierce determination in her eyes, "you're going to need the servant stair keys my grandmother hid in the buttery. Nobody remembers they're there. Not even Lady Eleanor."
