Chapter 4: A House Divided

The fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across the towering bookshelves. Julian stood up slowly, placing himself squarely between Eleanor and the frightened little girl on the settee. The air in the library grew dense, charged with a volatile mixture of fear, betrayal, and unyielding ambition.
"Treason, Eleanor?" Julian replied, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all marital warmth. "Or is it simply the correction of a murder you and your father orchestrated ten years ago? The Alistair bloodline was never extinguished. You built an entire empire on a foundation of corpses and forged paper."
Eleanor didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, humorless smile touched the corners of her painted lips. She took another step forward, the heavy diamonds at her throat catching the firelight like glittering drops of poison. "History is written by the survivors, Julian. And right now, you are standing on the wrong side of survival. That child is a liability. She threatens every asset, every title, every breath of luxury we enjoy."
"She is a child," Julian snapped, his restraint finally fracturing. "A seven-year-old girl who deserves a life, not an unmarked grave like her mother."
"Her mother chose her fate the night she fled," Eleanor countered sharply. "And you will choose yours right now. Are you going to throw away everything we’ve built—everything I planned—for a nameless orphan with a scratched-up pearl?"
Clara whimpered softly, pulling her knees up to her chest and burying her face in the white fabric of her dress. The raw vulnerability of the child acted as an anchor for Julian, pulling him back from the precipice of cowardice he had inhabited for years. He had compromised his morals for comfort, looked the other way when Eleanor’s ruthlessness carved a path through their competitors, but he drew the line at infanticide.
"I am done being your accomplice, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice ringing with a newfound, resolute authority. He reached into his breast pocket and produced his phone. "The authorities are going to hear about the Alistair estate holdings. The real ones."
In a blur of motion, Eleanor lunged forward, not toward Julian, but toward the heavy brass poker resting beside the fireplace. With surprising speed, she swept it up, her eyes blazing with manic desperation. "You will do no such thing!" she screamed, the polished veneer finally shattering completely.

Julian reacted instantly, shoving the heavy oak table between them just as the brass poker struck the wood with a deafening crash, splintering the mahogany. "Clara, run!" he roared, grabbing the girl by the hand and hauling her toward the hidden servant’s exit behind the tapestry.
They plunged into the dark corridor just as Eleanor’s furious shrieks echoed behind them, bouncing off the stone walls as the hunt through the Vance manor officially began.
