Chapter 9 - The Glove Compartment

The private jet on the screen taxied down the tarmac in the background, its jet engines screaming a deafening roar that bled through the speaker of Mark’s smartphone. Clara’s smile remained fixed, polite, and terrifyingly calm as she stared directly into the camera lens.

"You're a monster," Mark said, his voice shaking with a rage so pure it had turned entirely cold.

Clara tilted her head with mock sympathy. "I'm a survivor, Mark. Just like you're about to find out. Goodbye." The screen went black as the call disconnected.

Mark slammed his brakes, pulling the sedan onto the gravel shoulder of the highway just fifty yards from the perimeter fence of the private airstrip. Through the chain-link barrier, he watched the sleek white jet accelerate down the runway, its landing gear lifting off the asphalt before vanishing into the heavy night clouds.

She was gone. Just like that.

He sat in the suffocating silence of the car for a long, agonizing minute, the red glow of the dashboard casting eerie shadows across his face. Then, Clara’s final words echoed back into his mind: Check the glove compartment before you do anything stupid.

Mark reached across the passenger seat, his fingers trembling as he pressed the latch on the glove box. The door dropped open with a soft click, spilling a cascade of paper onto the floorboards.

He reached inside and pulled out a heavy, manila envelope stamped with the logo of the county land registry office. Inside wasn't a note or a taunt. It was a certified deed—transferring the mortgage, the property title, and every single dollar of his late parents' inheritance directly to an offshore trust bearing Elena’s legal maiden name.

Mark froze, the paper slipping from his numb fingers.

Elena. Not Clara. Or rather, Clara hadn't acted alone. The forged signatures, the property transfers, the terrifying staged assault in the living room—it wasn't a rescue mission by estranged relatives. It was a coordinated corporate heist executed by a family of professional grifters, with Elena planted as the Trojan horse inside his own home.

His phone buzzed again in the cup holder. It was an incoming text message from an unknown number.

Look out your rear window, Mark. You never really knew who you were sharing a bed with, did you?

May you like

Mark whipped around in the driver's seat, slamming his back against the door as a pair of blinding headlights suddenly flared directly behind his sedan, boxing him in against the highway guardrail.
