Chapter 14 - The Panic Button

The small red icon on Mark’s smartphone screen pulsed with a steady, rhythmic glow. Without taking his eyes off the federal marshal standing twenty feet away, Mark applied the slightest downward pressure of his thumb against the touchscreen, triggering the silent emergency broadcast protocol linked directly to the local county sheriff's central dispatch.

Julian pressed the suppressor harder against the base of Mark’s skull. "I said, tell him to back off, Mark. Do it now, or I swear to God I'll pull the trigger."

Mark swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "Marshal... don't shoot," he called out, his voice cracking with feigned panic. "He's... he's got a gun to my head. I can't move."

Officer Vance lowered his stance slightly, his weapon locked dead-center on the silhouette of Julian in the backseat. "Sir, drop the weapon immediately. You are federal property. There is no escape route. The perimeter is fully secured by tactical units."

Elena stood frozen between the two armed standoffs, her eyes darting frantically from the marshal to the car. The mask of calm invulnerability had finally cracked, revealing the desperate, cornered criminal beneath the maroon turtleneck.

"Julian, don't be an idiot," Elena snapped, her voice rising in panic. "The feds have the titanium lockbox. The keys are gone. Shooting him isn't going to change anything!"

"Shut up, Elena!" Julian snarled back through the glass. "If we go down, we go down with leverage!"

Mark felt the pressure of the gun barrel ease up by a fraction of a millimeter—just enough for Julian to shift his weight as he tried to open the rear door while keeping the weapon trained on Mark's head. It was the microsecond Mark had been waiting for.

With an explosive burst of adrenaline, Mark slammed his left foot against the brake pedal while throwing his entire body weight backward into the backseat, driving his elbow straight into Julian’s chest with all the fury of a man who had nothing left to lose.

The 9mm pistol discharged with a deafening crack, the bullet shattering the sunroof into a cascade of sparkling glass fragments that rained down over the interior like diamonds.

Before Julian could recover his balance, the front and rear doors of the sedan were violently ripped open by three tactical officers who swarmed the vehicle like a wave of dark water. Julian was hauled out of the backseat onto the gravel in a blur of heavy combat boots and heavy restraints, while Elena was slammed against the side of the SUV, her wrists cuffed behind her back with brutal efficiency.

Mark scrambled out of the passenger side, gasping for breath as he hit the cold ground, his hands raised in the air.

Officer Vance stepped up, holstering his weapon and extending a hand to pull Mark to his feet. "You alright, Mr. Hayes?"

Mark nodded numbly, wiping a speck of glass from his shoulder as he watched Julian and Elena being pushed into separate transport vans. But as the flashing red and blue lights illuminated the open highway, Officer Vance’s radio crackled to life with a message that froze everyone in their tracks.

"Command to Unit Four... we just intercepted a second transmission from the private airstrip. Clara Vance didn't leave the country. Her flight plan was a decoy. She just landed her chopper on the roof of your own house."
