Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Hallway

The sirens wailed in the distance, cutting through the quiet suburban afternoon like a jagged blade. Mark dropped to his knees beside Clara again, ignoring Elena entirely as he pressed the smartphone to his ear, relaying their address to the dispatcher with frantic precision. Clara’s eyelids fluttered, a faint groan escaping her lips as consciousness slowly dragged her back to the harsh reality of the living room floor.

"Stay with me, honey, just stay with me," Mark pleaded, his voice breaking as he stroked her pale cheek.

Clara winced, her hand instinctively moving to protect her lower abdomen. "The baby, Mark... check the baby," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator in the open-plan kitchen.

Across the room, Elena uncrossed her arms and walked toward the front entryway, her black jeans swishing with a calm, deliberate rhythm that defied the chaos of the room. She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out a second, unmarked smartphone, and typed a quick message before slipping it back out of sight.

"She's just putting on a show," Elena called out coldly over her shoulder. "She always does this when she doesn't get her way."

Mark shot her a murderous glare, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth ached. "Shut up, Elena! Just shut your mouth before I lose control of myself completely!"

The dispatcher’s voice echoed from the phone screen in Mark’s hand. "Sir, are the paramedics inside yet? Keep pressure on any visible injuries. Do not let the assailant leave the premises."

"She's right there, and she's not going anywhere," Mark said, his eyes locked on Elena. But as he spoke, the front door clicked open without a knock, swinging inward to reveal a tall man in a dark trench coat holding a worn leather briefcase.

It wasn't the paramedics. It was Julian, Elena’s estranged husband, holding a legal document stamped with a court seal.

Julian stepped into the living room, stepping past Elena as if he had orchestrated the entire afternoon. He looked down at Clara lying on the floor, then up at Mark with an expression of profound, chilling indifference.

"You're wasting your time calling an ambulance, Mark," Julian said smoothly, lifting the legal paper. "You don't even own this house anymore. And the baby? That's part of the injunction we filed this morning."
