Chapter 10 - The Headlights in the Rearview

The blinding glare of the high beams illuminated the interior of Mark’s sedan like a daylight interrogation room. He squinted through the rearview mirror, shielding his eyes with a raised forearm as a heavy black SUV pulled up inches from his rear bumper, its engine rumbling with a low, menacing purr.
Before Mark could throw his car into reverse, the passenger door of the SUV swung open. A figure stepped out into the cone of light, wearing a dark trench coat and holding a familiar leather briefcase. It wasn't Julian. It was Elena.
She walked slowly toward Mark’s driver-side window, her maroon turtleneck collar turned up against the wind, her dark hair catching the amber glow of the headlights. There was no trace of the frantic, cornered woman who had shrieked What you get, she made me do it on the living room rug just hours ago. She looked calm, powerful, and completely in control.
Mark rolled his window down halfway, his hand gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned translucent.
"It was all a setup," Mark said, his voice dangerously low. "You, Julian, the fake ambulance... you were working with her the entire time."
Elena stopped just inches from the glass, a faint, condescending smile touching her lips. "Working with her? Oh, Mark, you really are as naive as Clara said. Clara didn't run away with our stolen money. She was our partner until she tried to cut us out of the offshore accounts last week."
Mark stared at her, the final pieces of the puzzle snapping into place with sickening clarity. "So the assault... the fight in the living room..."
"Was a performance," Elena finished smoothly. "We needed a reason to get the police involved, secure the property transfer through Julian’s legal loopholes, and flush her out into the open so she’d lead us to the primary flash drive containing the decryption keys. And thanks to your pathetic hero complex, it worked like a charm."
"You orchestrated the whole thing," Mark whispered, horror curling in his gut. "You destroyed my life just to settle a score between thieves."
"We didn't destroy your life, Mark. We just cleared out the garbage," Elena replied coldly. She tapped her knuckles twice against the window frame. "And now, you're going to sign the final quitclaim deed transferring the commercial warehouse district property over to my holding company. Otherwise, Officer Vance is going to find three hundred thousand dollars of unregistered bearer bonds in the trunk of your car."
Mark’s blood ran cold. He looked from Elena’s unblinking eyes to the rear hatch of his sedan, realizing with terrifying certainty that the trap hadn't just closed around Clara—it had snapped shut around him.
"And if I refuse?" Mark asked, his voice steadying despite the terror gripping his chest.
Elena stepped back into the glare of the headlights, pulling out her smartphone and tapping the screen twice.
"Then the police report gets filed, the warrant goes out, and by morning, you'll be sitting in a federal penitentiary taking the fall for a fifteen-year international identity theft ring," Elena said softly. "Choose wisely, Mark. You have thirty seconds before I press send."

Before Mark could answer, the side door of the black SUV slid open, and a third figure stepped out of the shadows, holding a heavy laptop open to a live satellite feed of Mark’s suburban home—where the living room rug was currently being torn apart by someone looking for something far more valuable than money.
