Chapter 13 - The Second Weapon

The sharp metallic click echoed inside the confined space of the sedan like a gunshot. Mark froze mid-movement, one foot planted on the cold asphalt outside his door, his body half-twisted toward the passenger seat.

From the shadows of the floorboard near the glove box, a hand reached up—not Elena’s, and not Clara’s. It was Julian.

Julian had slipped into the back of Mark’s sedan through the unlocked rear door while Mark was distracted by Elena’s ultimatum. Now, seated directly behind the driver's seat, Julian pressed the cold barrel of a suppressed 9mm pistol firmly against the base of Mark’s skull.

"Don't move an inch, Mark," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously calm, devoid of all the polished lawyerly pretense he had worn earlier in the evening. "Tell the federal marshal to turn around, or your brains are going to paint the steering wheel."

Outside, the flashing red and blue lights of the marshal’s cruiser strobed across the highway guardrail. Officer Vance’s voice boomed through a handheld loudspeaker.

"Elena Vance, put your hands behind your back! Step away from the vehicle immediately!"

Elena stood paralyzed beside Mark’s driver-side door, her eyes darting between the advancing federal marshal and the closed window of Mark’s sedan. She could see Julian through the tinted glass, holding the weapon to Mark's head. A desperate, calculating look crossed her face.

"Marshal, wait!" Elena shouted, raising her hands halfway while keeping her voice steady. "The man inside the car—he's holding a hostage! He's the ringleader of the entire operation!"

Mark’s breath hitched in his throat. The sheer audacity of the betrayal took his breath away. She was flipping the script in real-time, using the sudden tactical intervention to pivot from cornered suspect to terrified bystander.

"Don't listen to her," Mark strained out, keeping his body rigid against the pressure of the gun barrel at his neck. "She's lying... Julian is in the back... he has a gun..."

"Shut your mouth, Mark," Julian hissed, pressing the steel barrel harder against the skin at the base of Mark's skull. "One word louder and you're dead before the marshals reach the door."

Officer Vance stopped twenty feet away, his service weapon drawn and aimed directly at Elena, though his eyes flicked toward the interior of Mark’s sedan as he processed the sudden complication.

"Step away from the vehicle, ma'am, and drop your hands where I can see them," Officer Vance commanded, his tone uncompromising. "Driver, slowly open your door and place your hands on the roof."

Julian let out a low, venomous laugh right behind Mark's ear. "He's not going to do that, Officer," Julian called out through the slightly cracked rear window. "Unless you want to explain to the bureau why an innocent civilian caught in a domestic dispute ended up with a bullet in his spine."

Mark stared straight ahead through the windshield, his fingers gripping the edge of the open door. He could see the federal marshal’s finger tightening slightly on the trigger of his service weapon, and he knew that any sudden movement would trigger a shootout that nobody would walk away from. But as his eyes scanned the dashboard reflection, he noticed the emergency panic button on his smartphone screen—still glowing silently beneath his thumb.
