Chapter 1 - The Descent

The warm living room rug muffled the sickening thud as Clara’s body hit the floor. Her brown hair, usually neat in a ponytail, unraveled across the neutral-toned fibers like spilled ink. Just seconds ago, her sister-in-law Elena had seized her by those very strands, executing a sudden, vicious yank that brought a pregnant woman crashing down. Elena stood over her, breathing heavily, her maroon turtleneck bunching up around her flushed neck.
"What you get, she made me do it," Elena snarled, her voice sharp and devoid of remorse.
Mark lunged across the coffee table, his grey jacket catching on the corner of the polished wood. He dropped to his knees beside his wife, frantically pressing his fingers against the side of her neck, searching for a pulse beneath her pale skin. Panic clawed at his chest, cold and relentless, as he stared down at her motionless form.
"She's not moving," Mark whispered, his voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming dread.
Elena crossed her arms tightly over her chest, taking a deliberate step backward. The defiance in her dark eyes hardened, her expression shifting into an unsettling mask of cold calculation.
"She deserved it," Elena snapped, glaring down at Clara's still body.
Mark looked up, his face twisted in pure disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? She's pregnant, Elena! What is wrong with you?"
Elena didn't blink. "You think you know everything, Mark. You think she's the victim. But she brought this on herself."
Mark scrambled to his feet, grabbing his smartphone from the side table with trembling fingers. He hit the emergency speed dial, his eyes darting back to Clara, who still hadn't taken a breath. He held the phone to his ear, his breathing ragged as the line connected on the second ring.
"I need an ambulance," Mark said urgently into the receiver, pacing the length of the rug. "My sister-in-law just assaulted my pregnant wife. I want to report this to the police."
Elena didn't flinch. Instead, she leaned against the bookshelf, a mocking smile playing at the corners of her lips. She looked directly into Mark's terrified eyes and spoke with chilling calm.
"Go ahead, call the police," Elena said defiantly. "Call them, tell them whatever you want. No one is going to believe you."

Mark froze, the phone pressed hard against his ear. As the dispatcher’s voice crackled through the speaker asking for his address, Clara’s hand suddenly twitched against the carpet, her fingers curling into a fist.
