Chapter 9 - The Fireplace Poker

The metallic gleam of the heavy brass fireplace poker caught the dim lamplight of the study. Eleanor’s fingers curled around the handle, her knuckles whitening as she lifted it smoothly from its iron stand. She stepped quietly across the Persian rug toward the open vault, her movements calculated and silent.

Clara was still staring at the faded Polaroid in her hand, lost in the heavy weight of the past. The photograph told a story of betrayal that spanned generations, binding her family’s tragedy to the Vance dynasty in blood and fire.

“It’s a touching picture, isn’t it?” Eleanor’s voice cut through the silence of the room like a razor blade.

Clara gasped, dropping the Polaroid back into the metal box as she spun around on her knees. She looked up just in time to see the heavy brass poker descending toward her shoulder. She threw her hands up instinctively, deflecting the blow, but the heavy metal grazed her forearm with a dull thud, sending a sharp wave of pain shooting up her arm.

“You should have stayed in the kitchen, Clara,” Eleanor hissed, lifting the poker for a second, more lethal strike. “Some doors are meant to stay closed forever.”

Clara scrambled backward, her back hitting the reinforced steel door of the open vault. She had nowhere left to run. Her breathing came in ragged gasps as she clutched her injured arm, watching Eleanor tower over her with cold, merciless fury in her blue eyes.

“You can’t hide what your family did,” Clara managed to say through clenched teeth, her voice shaking but defiant. “The federal investigators already have copies of everything. Even if you kill me here, the truth is already out.”

Eleanor hesitated, the poker hovering inches from Clara’s face. The color drained from her cheeks as the reality of Clara’s words sank in. “What do you mean, they have copies?”

Before Clara could answer, a loud crash echoed from the front hallway as the heavy mahogany doors of the estate were kicked open with brute force. Heavy footsteps thundered across the marble floor toward the study.

Eleanor froze, lowering the poker by a fraction of an inch as the study door flew open to reveal Julian standing in the doorway, breathless and bleeding from a cut on his temple.
