Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Switch

The polished marble floor of the grand hallway reflected the harsh sparkle of the crystal chandeliers overhead. Julian Vance stood frozen just a step past the heavy mahogany doors, his dark-haired silhouette framed by the wood-paneled walls. In the center of the corridor, his wife, Eleanor, still breathed heavily. Her elegant silk cream-colored robe rustled as she glared down at Clara, the young maid kneeling on the floor. Clara wore a classic black-and-white maid dress, her small white cap askew. The thin leather switch in Eleanor’s hand felt heavier than it looked, its dark braid catching the golden light.
Julian stepped closer, his jaw tightening inside his black velvet suit jacket. “Put it down, Eleanor,” he commanded, his voice unnaturally calm yet laced with a dangerous edge.
Eleanor scoffed, her blue eyes narrowing as she looked from her husband to the trembling girl at her feet. “You always interfere, Julian. You have no idea what this little thief has been doing behind our backs.”
“I said, put it down,” Julian repeated, not raising his voice, stepping directly into her space.
Eleanor’s hand trembled slightly before she tossed the switch to the floor. It hit the marble with a sharp, heavy clatter that echoed through the empty wing of the estate. “You are making a massive mistake protecting her,” she hissed.
Julian ignored her, kneeling beside Clara. “Did she hurt you?” he asked gently.
Clara looked up, her tear-filled eyes wide with a mixture of fear and lingering shock. She swallowed hard, her voice trembling. “No, sir.”
Julian stood, turning his back on his wife to address the maid directly. “Then tell me the truth, Clara. Why were you in the East Archive this morning?”
May you like
Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. She looked past Julian to Eleanor, whose expression hardened into pure ice.
