Chapter 3 - The Missing Ledger

The words hung in the cold air of the hallway, paralyzing Julian in his tracks. The ledger. The single document that contained every transaction, every offshore account, and every hidden liability of Vance Enterprises. Julian stared at his wife, his mind racing through a dozen terrifying scenarios. If Clara had seen the ledger, everything they had built—their wealth, their social standing, their entire lives—was hanging by a thread.
“Where is it?” Julian demanded, grabbing Eleanor by her silk-clad arm, his grip firm enough to bruise.
Eleanor winced, yanking her arm free with a sharp hiss. “Watch yourself, Julian. I secured it before she could read past the first page. But the fact remains: she knows too much.”
“If she knows too much, firing her won’t solve the problem,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “People talk. Especially girls like that, with families in the valley who are already struggling to pay their medical bills.”
“Then we pay her off,” Eleanor suggested casually, smoothing the fabric of her cream-colored robe. “A generous severance package with a strict non-disclosure agreement. It’s what we always do.”
“It’s not that simple anymore,” Julian said, shaking his head. He walked over to the spot where the leather switch still lay on the marble floor, bending down to pick it up. He turned it over in his hands, feeling the worn grain of the leather. “She wasn’t just looking at the numbers, Eleanor. Clara’s father used to work in the accounting department before the factory fire twenty years ago. He wasn’t just a regular employee.”
Eleanor’s face paled slightly, the color draining from her cheeks beneath her elegant makeup. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying she didn’t stumble into that archive by accident,” Julian said, looking up with dark, unreadable eyes. “She was looking for her father’s name.”

Before Eleanor could respond, a sharp knock echoed from the front foyer. A courier stood outside the heavy glass doors, holding a thick manila envelope stamped with urgent federal seals.
