Chapter 2 - The Archive’s Secret

The silence in the hallway stretched thin, broken only by the distant ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer. Julian remained standing over Clara, his dark eyes demanding an answer. Eleanor folded her arms tightly across her chest, a smug, dangerous smile touching the corners of her lips. She knew something Julian did not, and the tension in the air felt suffocating.

“Well, Clara?” Julian prompted, his tone losing a fraction of its warmth. “The East Archive is strictly off-limits. What were you looking for?”

Clara kept her gaze fixed on the polished marble between her knees. Her fingers twisted the fabric of her black skirt. “I was only dusting, Mr. Vance,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “The master bedroom wing requires daily attention.”

“Dusting?” Eleanor laughed, a cold, sharp sound that grated against the quiet estate. “At six in the morning? Through a locked door that requires a biometric pass?”

Julian turned his head sharply toward his wife. “A biometric lock? Since when is the archive locked that way?”

Eleanor’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she recovered her composure. “Since company security demanded it, Julian. Or have you forgotten the corporate merger we are finalizing next week?”

Julian looked back down at the maid. Clara’s silence spoke volumes. She hadn’t been dusting. She had been searching for something specific, and Eleanor had caught her red-handed. Julian extended a hand, offering to help Clara to her feet. The girl hesitated, glancing nervously at Eleanor, before placing her small, cold hand in his. Julian pulled her up smoothly.

“Go to the kitchen, Clara,” Julian instructed, his voice firm. “We will finish this conversation later.”

Clara curtsied hastily and hurried down the corridor, her shoes clicking softly against the marble. Eleanor watched her go, her expression darkening into a scowl.

“You are undermining my authority in this house,” Eleanor said the moment Clara turned the corner.

Julian stepped closer to his wife, his gaze piercing. “No, Eleanor. I am trying to figure out why my wife is interrogating a nineteen-year-old maid with a leather switch in our hallway.”

May you like

Eleanor tilted her chin up defiantly. “Because she found the ledger, Julian.”
