Chapter 5 - The Digital Trap

Julian stopped dead on the second-step landing, his fingers brushing against the cold plastic casing of the flash drive. He picked it up slowly, turning it over in his hand. There was a handwritten label taped to the side in neat, block letters: The Truth. Behind him, Eleanor caught up, her breathing ragged as she stared at the small device in his palm.

“Is that what I think it is?” she asked, her voice tight with anxiety.

“It’s a data transfer,” Julian said grimly. “She didn’t just look at the ledger in the archive. She downloaded it.”

“Give it to me,” Eleanor demanded, reaching out a manicured hand. “I’ll destroy it before she realizes it’s missing.”

Julian pulled his hand back, stepping out of her reach. “No. Destroying this won’t stop whatever she’s already uploaded to the cloud. We need to know where this data went, and who she’s communicating with outside of this estate.”

“You’re protecting her again,” Eleanor hissed, her eyes flashing with anger. “You look at that girl and you see your own past, don’t you? You think because your father made mistakes, you have to atone for them by letting this little viper destroy everything we’ve built?”

“My father didn’t just make mistakes, Eleanor. He committed murder, and you helped him cover it up,” Julian said, the words cutting through the hallway like a knife.

Eleanor flinched as if she had been physically struck. She opened her mouth to retort, but no sound came out. The dark secret that bound their marriage together had finally been spoken aloud in the open air of the estate.

Julian pocketed the flash drive and continued down the service stairs toward the kitchen. The heavy oak door was ajar, letting out a faint shaft of yellow light into the dim corridor. He pushed it open quietly. The kitchen was empty, spotless, and completely silent. A kettle was sitting on the stove, its spout hissing gently as steam escaped into the air. Clara was gone.

On the wooden prep table in the center of the room sat a single piece of lined paper torn from a notepad. Julian walked over and picked it up. Written in neat cursive were the coordinates of an abandoned warehouse down by the old harbor, alongside a single sentence: Meet me where it all burned down, Mr. Vance.
