Chapter 8 - The Abandoned Safehouse

The rain fell in heavy, relentless sheets, drumming a chaotic rhythm against the rusted corrugated metal roof of the abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the industrial district. Mark stepped cautiously through the shattered side door, his hand resting on the grip of a suppressed pistol Elena had slipped to him before they crossed the perimeter. The cavernous interior was dark, smelling strongly of mold, damp concrete, and old motor oil.

Elena swept the corners with her weapon raised, her boots making a soft crunching sound on the debris-scattered floor.

"According to the GPS ping from the micro-SD card, Sarah’s secure terminal was broadcasting from this exact grid coordinate less than twenty minutes ago," Elena whispered over the sound of the rain. "Stay sharp. If the DIA dropped her here, she might not be alone."

Mark navigated through a maze of rusted steel shelving units and rotting wooden crates, his eyes scanning every shadow. The memory of Sarah holding that thick manila folder at the school flashed through his mind. Every piece of the puzzle was falling into place, but the picture it formed was more agonizing than a physical wound. She had lived a lie for years, sleeping beside him while transmitting his movements to handlers who viewed human beings as disposable collateral.

Suddenly, a soft metallic clink echoed from the far corner of the warehouse, near a makeshift office partitioned off with plywood walls.

Mark froze, raising a hand to signal Elena. He crept forward, pressing his shoulder against the rotting wood exterior of the office. He counted to three in his head, pivoted around the doorframe with his pistol raised, and froze.

Sitting alone at a folding metal table in the center of the dusty room was Sarah.

She looked entirely different from the composed woman who had confronted him at the school. Her hair was disheveled, her beige blouse stained with mud, and her hands were bound tightly behind her back with heavy plastic zip ties. A crude piece of grey duct tape was plastered firmly across her mouth. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as Mark stepped into her field of vision, frantically shaking her head from side to side.

Mark lowered his weapon slightly, a cold mixture of fury and disbelief washing over him. He stepped forward and ripped the tape away from her face in one sharp motion.

Sarah gasped loudly, sucking in air as her lower lip trembled uncontrollably.

"Mark..." she choked out, tears spilling instantly over her lashes. "Thank God... you have to get out of here. It’s a trap."

Mark stopped just inches from the table, looking down at her with eyes devoid of warmth.

"A trap?" Mark echoed, his voice dangerously quiet. "You spent five years lying to my face, Sarah. You played the part of the devoted wife while feeding every movement I made straight to the DIA. Don't talk to me about traps."

Sarah shook her head rapidly, sobbing as she strained against her bindings.

May you like

"You don't understand," she gasped, her voice breaking under the weight of sheer panic. "They didn't just recruit me... they took Clara to force my compliance from the very beginning."
