Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Tunnel

Through the dense, chemical smoke, shadowy figures moved with terrifying speed and precision. A gloved hand grabbed Mark by the collar of his uniform, ripping him out of the van and onto the wet asphalt of the subterranean service tunnel. Gunshots cracked sharply in the confined space, the muzzle flashes illuminating the concrete walls with strobe-like intensity.
Mark coughed violently, shielding his face as he was dragged behind a thick concrete support pillar. Bullets sparked off the masonry just inches above his head.
"Keep your head down, Sergeant!" a familiar female voice shouted over the chaos.
Mark wiped the stinging smoke from his eyes and looked up. Kneeling beside him, firing a suppressed carbine with practiced ease, was Lieutenant Elena Vance—his former intelligence officer from the overseas deployment. She wore civilian tactical gear, her hair pulled back into a tight braid, and her expression was a mask of cold concentration.
"Elena?" Mark gasped, pressing his back against the pillar. "What the hell are you doing here? How did you find us?"
Elena ejected an empty magazine with a sharp click, shoved a fresh one into her weapon, and peered around the edge of the pillar to fire two controlled shots.
"Saving your ungrateful life, Mark," Elena said without looking back. "The DIA wasn't planning on transferring you to a holding facility. They were taking you to a disposal site. You knew too much about the missing payload."
Mark shook his head, frantically checking his empty wrists where the zip ties had been severed during the extraction.
"I don't care about the payload right now! Sarah and Clara are still back in the city," Mark yelled, grabbing Elena by the tactical vest. "The DIA used Sarah to get to me. They know about the custody battle; they’re using my family as bait!"
Elena lowered her carbine for a fraction of a second, her dark eyes flashing with a mix of pity and warning.
"Mark, listen to me very carefully," Elena said, her voice deadly serious. "The DIA didn't just use Sarah as bait. Look at the data chip I pulled from the transport van's navigation system."
She shoved a small micro-SD card into Mark’s palm.
"What is this?" Mark asked, staring down at the tiny piece of plastic.

"That's the real reason your deployment was classified," Elena whispered, reloading her weapon as approaching footsteps echoed down the tunnel. "Sarah isn't just an innocent ex-wife caught in the crossfire. She signed the initial intelligence recruitment papers five years ago. She was your handler from the very beginning."
