Chapter 11 - Beneath the Concrete Veins

The rushing rainwater roared in their ears as Mark and Sarah crawled through the pitch-black concrete drainage pipe, the cold current soaking through their tactical gear. The air was thick with the smell of wet earth and rust, but for the moment, the gunfire was muffled behind layers of reinforced masonry.
Mark used his tactical flashlight sparingly, the narrow beam cutting through the misty spray to guide their path forward. Sarah stayed close behind him, her boots splashing frantically against the slick concrete floor as they pushed deeper into the underground network.
"How much further to the perimeter fence?" Mark asked, his voice echoing loudly in the enclosed tube.
"Another two hundred yards," Sarah panted, wiping muddy water from her face. "The culvert empties out right near the old railway crossing. From there, we can steal a vehicle from the maintenance yard."
Mark slowed his pace slightly, turning his head to look back at her in the dim light.
"You said Clara is being held at the primary extraction zone," Mark said, his tone flat and demanding answers. "Where is that facility located?"
Sarah hesitated for a fraction of a second, the glowing beam of the flashlight catching the deep shadows under her eyes.
"It's the abandoned communications relay station on Blackwood Ridge," Sarah confessed, her voice trembling slightly. "It's a federal black-site. Heavily fortified. They're using it to process all the operational data files before the congressional subcommittee arrives tomorrow morning."
Mark felt his blood run cold. Blackwood Ridge was heavily guarded by elite federal contractors who operated outside standard military oversight. Breaking into that facility without heavy support was practically a suicide mission.
"And Clara is inside that facility?" Mark asked, his grip tightening around his sidearm.
"She's in the secure communications vault on the lower subterranean level," Sarah said, fresh tears mixing with the mud on her cheeks. "They used her as insurance to make sure I delivered the surveillance package on time. But once they finished downloading the files an hour ago, they gave the order to sanitize the site."
"Sanitize it?" Mark repeated, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "Meaning they're going to eliminate everyone inside to keep the operation secret."
Sarah nodded slowly, her shoulders shaking with suppressed terror.
"Yes. Including our daughter."

A sudden, metallic grinding noise echoed from the drainage pipe far behind them, cutting off any further conversation. Mark spun around, aiming his flashlight back down the dark tunnel. Through the beam of light, the distinctive red glow of an electronic tracking drone hovered just above the rushing water, gliding silently toward them with its camera lens locked directly onto their position.
