Chapter 14 - The Descent into the Vault

The heavy steel door slammed heavily against the concrete floor of the subterranean stairwell as Mark and Sarah plunged into the dim, amber-lit corridors of the Blackwood Ridge facility. Emergency lights hummed overhead, casting an eerie, flickering glow over the sterile white walls. The air inside was cold, smelling faintly of ozone and industrial cleaning agents.

"Which way?" Mark demanded, keeping his rifle raised as they swept past a row of empty security offices.

"Down to sublevel three," Sarah said, leading the way with a tactical flashlight cutting through the gloom. "The secure communications vault is at the end of the main corridor. That's where they're holding Clara."

Footsteps echoed sharply from the stairwell behind them—multiple operators in heavy tactical gear, shouting muffled commands as they poured into the bunker in pursuit.

"They're right behind us," Mark muttered, spinning around to fire a single controlled shot down the long hallway, shattering the overhead lights and plunging their pursuers into sudden darkness. "Keep moving!"

They rounded a corner and came to a dead stop in front of a massive circular bank vault door bearing the stenciled designation VAULT 4 - SECURE ASSET STORAGE. A thick digital keypad glowed a steady blue beside the heavy steel locking wheel.

Sarah dashed to the keypad, punching in a rapid sequence of numbers, but the screen immediately flashed a harsh red error message accompanied by a sharp buzzer sound.

"Access denied!" Sarah cried out, her voice cracking with desperation. "They've changed the master encryption key from the central command deck upstairs!"

Heavy footsteps thundered closer around the corner behind them, accompanied by the metallic clatter of a breached door.

Mark didn't hesitate. He stepped up to the massive vault door, pulled a pair of heavy mechanical bypass wires from his tactical kit, and jammed them directly into the emergency maintenance port beneath the keypad.

"Mark, there's no time to hack a military-grade vault manually!" Sarah yelled, turning to raise her rifle toward the hallway as shadows began to materialize in the flickering light.

"Watch the corridor!" Mark commanded, his fingers working with frantic, desperate speed as he crossed the electrical relays inside the bypass box.

A volley of gunfire chewed through the drywall just inches above their heads, raining plaster down over their shoulders. Sarah returned fire, squeezing the trigger in steady, controlled bursts that forced the advancing DIA operatives to dive back behind the concrete corner.

Suddenly, with a deep, mechanical groan, the heavy steel locking wheel of Vault 4 spun violently on its own, and the massive door hissed as pneumatic seals released a cloud of white vapor.

Mark kicked the heavy door wide open, grabbed Sarah by the arm, and pulled her inside just as a hail of bullets sparked off the steel doorframe.
