Chapter 4 - The Black-Site Transfer

The transfer happened without paperwork, without a phone call, and without a single civilian witness. Two men in unmarked tactical gear hauled Mark out of the precinct's secure back bay and shoved him into the back of a reinforced black van with tinted windows. The vehicle immediately accelerated into the evening traffic, weaving aggressively through the wet city streets.

Mark sat on the metal bench, his wrists now bound by heavy-duty zip ties rather than standard steel cuffs. Across from him sat the federal agent who had interrupted the precinct interrogation, a man whose lapel pin bore the subtle insignia of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

"You've been playing a very dangerous game, Davis," the DIA agent said, not bothering to look up from a ruggedized tablet in his hands. "Going to your daughter's school? Calling attention to yourself when you were explicitly ordered to drop off the grid?"

"My daughter has nothing to do with classified supply lines or your black-budget operations," Mark spat out, his voice sharp with anger. "I completed my contract. I delivered the package as agreed. My debt to you people was paid in full."

The agent looked up slowly, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"Debt in our line of work isn't paid when your contract ends, Sergeant. It's paid when we decide the file is closed," the agent replied smoothly. "And right now, your file is wide open because someone leaked the manifest of that shipment to an independent broker."

Mark leaned forward, ignoring the pull of the zip ties.

"I didn't leak anything," Mark said, locking eyes with the operative. "Sarah didn't hire a private investigator by coincidence, did she? You fed her those documents."

The agent didn't confirm or deny the accusation, but his silence spoke volumes.

"We needed leverage to ensure you remained compliant," the agent admitted quietly. "Civilians are fragile things, Davis. A frightened mother with a custody grievance makes an exceptionally effective leash."

"If you touch Sarah or Clara, I swear to God I will burn your entire operation to the ground," Mark growled, his voice dropping an octave as a primal fury surged through his chest.

The van suddenly lurched violently to the left, screeching tires echoing against concrete tunnel walls. The vehicle slammed to an abrupt halt, throwing both men against the interior panels. Before the DIA agent could draw his sidearm, the rear doors were blown open by a deafening blast of compressed air, and a wall of thick, disorienting smoke poured into the cargo hold.
