Chapter 13 - The Siege of Blackwood Ridge

The battered utility truck bounced violently over the unpaved access road, its headlights switched off as it careened through the dense pine forest surrounding Blackwood Ridge. Mark gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity, his eyes fixed on the heavy iron security gate blocking the entrance to the federal relay station ahead. In the passenger seat, Sarah loaded two spare magazines into a captured rifle she had pulled from the truck's emergency kit.

"The main gate is rigged with a motion sensor and a remote-detonation charge," Sarah warned, checking the bolt action of her weapon. "If we ram it, the guards will know we're here before we even touch the perimeter fence."

"We aren't going through the gate," Mark said coldly, pressing down harder on the accelerator. "Hold on."

Instead of slowing down for the checkpoint, Mark jerked the steering wheel hard to the left, crashing the utility truck straight through a rusted chain-link fence and sending wooden support posts splintering in every direction. The vehicle tore across the muddy clearing, plowing through thick underbrush before slamming to a halt against a steep embankment just fifty yards from the main concrete bunker.

Alarms immediately wailed across the facility. Red emergency strobe lights began to flash violently along the roofline, casting long, frantic shadows against the brutalist architecture.

"Go, go, go!" Mark ordered, kicking his door open and rolling out into the mud with his rifle raised.

Sarah scrambled out behind him, moving with the practiced precision of a trained operative as they dashed toward a low-profile maintenance access hatch set into the side of the concrete bunker. Bullets cracked through the rainy air overhead, kicking up fountains of mud and chewing into the bark of the pine trees around them.

Mark fired two rapid suppressive bursts toward the nearest watchtower, blinding the automated spotlight long enough for Sarah to reach the heavy steel access hatch. She jammed a digital override key fob into the electronic keypad, her fingers flying over the buttons as the red warning light blinked frantically.

"The override code has been changed!" Sarah gasped, her voice tightening with panic as the keypad flashed a harsh solid red. "They locked us out of the primary sub-level!"

From the perimeter road behind them, the heavy roar of approaching tactical vehicles echoed through the storm, their blinding high-beams cutting through the sheets of rain. The trap was snapping shut, and they were running out of time.

Mark stepped in front of Sarah, pulling a heavy-duty breaching charge from his tactical vest and slapping it magnetically against the reinforced steel hinges of the hatch.

"Cover your ears," Mark commanded, his voice dead calm.

He punched the detonator. A dull, concussive boom rocked the ground beneath their feet, blowing the heavy steel door completely off its hinges and filling the subterranean stairwell with thick, rolling smoke.
