Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Within

Julian stared down at David in utter disbelief, his fingers loosening their grip on the man's tactical vest. The betrayal cut deeper than any corporate maneuvering; this was systematic rot eating away at every branch of the extended family tree.
"You?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound exhaustion. "David, you swore an oath to protect the family estate, not act as a hired thug for Richard and my mother."
David spat a mouthful of blood onto the dusty floorboards, his smirk widening. "Protection is a myth, Julian. The Sterling empire isn't built on family loyalty; it’s built on survival of the fittest. Mother knew you were too soft to lead a global conglomerate. You actually care about people. That’s a fatal flaw in our world."
Julian hauled David up by his collar, shoving him hard against the stone fireplace. "Where is Clara?"
David chuckled, coughing slightly as the stones bit into his back. "If your little girlfriend ran toward the river, she’s walking right into Richard's trap. He stationed two more men down by the old logging bridge."
Without another word, Julian struck David across the jaw, knocking him out cold. He turned to Arthur, who was leaning heavily against the wooden table, catching his breath after the scuffle.
"Arthur, watch him," Julian ordered, grabbing a heavy flashlight from the counter. "I’m going after Clara."
"Take the ridge trail, Julian," Arthur called out, coughing into his handkerchief. "It's steeper, but it brings you out right above the logging bridge before they can corner her."
Julian bolted out the front door, leaving the burning embers of the cabin behind him. The night air burned his lungs as he sprinted along the narrow ridge trail, the moonlight occasionally breaking through the thick canopy of pine branches. Every second felt like an eternity as he replayed Clara’s frightened face in his mind. She was out here alone in the freezing wilderness with a three-month-old infant, hunted by men who had no moral boundaries.
As he reached the crest of the ridge overlooking the roaring river below, the beam of a flashlight cut through the darkness near the wooden logging bridge.
"Don't move, Clara! Hand over the briefcase or the baby gets wet," Richard’s voice echoed sharply across the ravine.
Julian peered down through the brush and saw Richard standing at the center of the old wooden bridge, blocking Clara’s path. Clara stood frozen a few yards away, clutching the steel briefcase in one hand while using her other arm to shield Leo, who had finally started crying softly from the cold.
"You're a monster, Richard," Clara shouted back, her voice ringing out bravely despite the terrifying odds. "Stealing from your own family just to feed your endless greed!"
Richard laughed, taking a slow step toward her with a cold glint in his eyes. "Greed is just another word for ambition, my dear. Now, give me the case before I lose my patience."

Julian didn't wait another second. He launched himself down the steep ravine wall, sliding through the loose dirt and pine needles like an avalanche straight toward the bridge.
