Chapter 3 - Fractured Loyalties

The words hung in the sterile corridor air, sharp enough to draw blood. Julian’s hand remained suspended mid-air for three agonizing seconds before he dropped it slowly to his side. Beside him, Clara pulled the baby closer, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the frosted glass door. The silence inside the office stretched on for a moment, followed by the faint rustle of heavy paper and the click of a desk drawer being slammed shut.
Julian didn't hesitate. He gripped the brass handle and shoved the door open, the heavy wood swinging inward with a resonant thud against the interior wall.
Marcus Vance spun around in his ergonomic leather chair, his face instantly draining of color. The veteran attorney stood up so quickly that his swivel chair rolled back and crashed against the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf behind him. A stack of leather-bound legal ledgers teetered and spilled onto the plush carpeting, scattering loose papers across the floor.
"Julian," Marcus stammered, smoothing down his expensive silk tie with trembling fingers while his eyes darted nervously toward the door. "You... you should be at the family dinner. What are you doing here at this hour?"
Julian stepped into the office, his presence immediately dominating the room. He didn't raise his voice, but the quiet menace in his tone made Marcus shrink back against his own mahogany desk.
"We left the dinner, Marcus, because my mother thinks women should earn their place while men like you quietly forge corporate documents behind our backs," Julian said, his stride measured and deliberate as he closed the distance between them.
Marcus swallowed hard, sweat beading along his hairline despite the crisp air conditioning in the high-rise suite. "I don't know what you're talking about, Julian. Your mother is a difficult woman, yes, but forgery? That's a dangerous accusation."
Clara stepped into the room, her expression resolute as she adjusted the sleeping infant. "We heard you, Marcus. You mentioned trust funds and prison. Who are 'we', Marcus? Who else is helping Eleanor strip Julian of his inheritance?"
Marcus looked at Clara, then back at Julian, his professional facade completely crumbling under the weight of their scrutiny. He reached out and gripped the edge of the desk for support.
"Your uncle Richard," Marcus confessed, his voice dropping to a panicked whisper. "He brought the amended trust documents to me last Tuesday. He claimed Eleanor had full authorization to reallocate eighty percent of the primary holdings into a secondary shell company controlled entirely by the family board of directors—with Eleanor as the sole voting proxy."
Julian stared at his lawyer, the betrayal cutting deeper than any corporate maneuver. "My father set up that trust specifically to protect my independence and to ensure Clara and Leo would be provided for regardless of family politics."
"Your father’s wishes don't matter anymore, Julian," a voice echoed smoothly from the doorway behind them.

Julian and Clara whipped around to find Uncle Richard standing in the threshold, leaning casually against the doorframe with a smug grin on his face, holding a thick manila envelope identical to the one seen on the dining room sideboard.
