Chapter 2 - The Hidden Envelope

The heavy oak front door clicked shut behind them, sealing away the murmurs of shocked relatives, but the cold night air offered little relief. Julian guided Clara toward his car parked in the cobblestone driveway, his hand steady on the small of her back while Leo stirred softly against her chest. The amber porch lights flickered against the manicured hedges of the estate that had belonged to the Sterling family for three generations. Julian’s mind raced, replaying Clara’s whispered warning about the legal papers left unattended on the sideboard amid the half-eaten appetizers. He knew his mother well; Eleanor never left anything to chance, least of all corporate control of the Sterling Foundation.
"Clara, what did you see on that sideboard?" Julian asked, opening the passenger door of the sedan and helping her settle comfortably with the baby carrier.
Clara looked around nervously, her breath pluming in the crisp autumn air as she shifted Leo to a more secure position.
"When I was clearing the dessert plates, your uncle Richard left a blue folder half-open near the candelabra," Clara explained, her voice breathless as she unbuckled her coat slightly to let the baby breathe. "I saw your name typed at the top of a stock transfer document, but it wasn't a transfer to you. It was an outright forfeiture clause signed with a signature that looked suspiciously forged."
Julian slammed the car door shut, the dull thud echoing sharply in the quiet courtyard. He rounded the hood and slid into the driver's seat, his hands hovering over the steering wheel for a long moment before he turned the ignition. The engine purred to life, casting dashboard lights across his sharp, tense features.
"My signature can't be forged easily," Julian said, though a cold knot began to form in his stomach. "Not without access to my private home safe."
Clara touched his sleeve gently, her fingers warm against his dark grey suit jacket. "Julian, remember when we stayed at the main house last month during your father’s memorial? Eleanor had the maintenance crew in your private study for three days under the guise of upgrading the security wiring."
Realization dawned slowly in Julian's eyes, hardening into an expression of dangerous clarity. He shifted the car into reverse and backed out of the circular driveway, leaving the glowing windows of the ancestral mansion behind them. They didn't drive toward their own modest townhouse across the city, however. Instead, Julian steered the vehicle toward the downtown high-rise where his most trusted corporate ally, Marcus Vance, kept a 24-hour office. Marcus was the senior legal counsel for Sterling Enterprises and the only person outside the family who knew the true mechanics behind the late patriarch's will.
As they pulled into the subterranean parking garage of the glass-and-steel skyscraper, Julian killed the engine. He turned to Clara, reaching out to stroke her cheek with a tenderness that contrasted sharply with the storm brewing in his mind.
"We are going up to see Marcus," Julian said softly. "Whatever is in that folder, we pull it into the light tonight."
They took the private elevator to the fortieth floor, the city lights spreading out beneath them like a sea of distant stars. The reception area was dark, but a sliver of light escaped from beneath Marcus’s office door. Julian raised his hand to knock, but before his knuckles touched the wood, they heard the muffled sound of Marcus shouting inside.
