Chapter 13 - The Harbor Uplink

The rain began to taper off into a fine mist as the sedan pulled up behind a weathered, disused fish-packing warehouse at the edge of the industrial harbor. Rusted cranes towered against the gray pre-dawn sky, casting long, skeletal shadows over the wooden piers where waves lapped rhythmically against the pilings. Julian killed the headlights, coasting the car into the deep shadow of the loading bay to keep it hidden from any pursuing vehicles.

"This way," Arthur whispered, leading them around the side of the warehouse toward a hidden side entrance concealed behind a wall of overgrown sea grass.

They slipped inside the damp, salt-scented interior of the old dock house. Arthur flicked on a small emergency flashlight, revealing a surprisingly modern workspace hidden within the rustic frame of the building—a bank of computer monitors, satellite communication dishes, and encrypted servers that Thomas Sterling had installed decades ago as an independent backup against corporate espionage.

Julian set the steel briefcase down on the central workbench and popped the latches. "Can we broadcast the files from here, Arthur?"

"Instantly," Arthur replied, already sitting down at the ergonomic chair and typing a complex command sequence into the glowing terminal. "Your grandfather designed this system to connect directly to the federal cyber-crimes database, bypassing local jurisdictional interference entirely."

Clara settled into a nearby chair, gently nursing Leo while keeping watch near the frosted glass window overlooking the harbor approach. The tension in the room was palpable; every second they spent connected to the grid increased the risk of Eleanor’s cyber-security team tracing their signal.

"Files are decrypting," Arthur announced, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed. "I'm uploading the original will, the forged transfer documents, and the bank statements proving embezzlement."

Suddenly, the computer screens flashed bright red, displaying a warning banner: WARNING: TRACE DETECTED FROM STERLING ENTERPRISES MAIN PROXY.

"They found our ping," Arthur cursed, typing furiously to reroute the signal through a series of anonymous international servers. "They're attempting to wipe the files from our end!"

Julian stepped behind Arthur, placing a firm hand on his shoulder. "Hold the connection just two minutes longer. Just long enough for the federal server to receive the complete packet."

Outside, the faint hum of approaching vehicle engines vibrated through the wooden floorboards of the dock house. Headlights swept across the frosted windows, signaling the arrival of Richard and a fresh team of corporate enforcers.

"They're outside," Clara said calmly, though her eyes locked onto the heavy wooden entrance door with fierce determination.

Arthur hit the final enter key just as the progress bar hit one hundred percent. TRANSMISSION COMPLETE, the monitor flashed in green text.

"It's done," Arthur whispered, a triumphant smile breaking through his weathered features. "Federal marshals have the complete package."

Before anyone else could speak, the heavy wooden doors of the dock house were blown open with a deafening crash as Richard and three armed guards swarmed into the room.
