Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The crystal chandelier above the long dining table cast fractured beams of light across the silver platters and flickering candles. Julian stood frozen in the doorway of the upscale dining room, his fingers tightening around the stem of his champagne glass until his knuckles turned bone-white. The carbonated liquid rippled against the rim as his chest heaved with a slow, controlled fury. Clara stood near the mahogany foot of the table, her blonde hair slightly disheveled, the beige baby carrier strapped securely to her chest. Inside the fabric pouch, three-month-old Leo slept fitfully, oblivious to the suffocating tension in the room.
Julian’s gaze swept across the seated guests before locking onto Clara. His jaw clenched, muscles ticking sharply in his cheek.
"What are you doing?" Julian asked, his voice low, shaking with restrained shock and barely contained anger.
Clara swallowed hard, her blue eyes glistening with unshed tears as she adjusted the strap of the carrier with trembling fingers.
"She said I had to serve everyone first," Clara explained softly, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the air conditioning.
At the head of the table, Julian’s mother, Eleanor, adjusted the dark V-neck dress resting sharply on her shoulders. She crossed her arms with rigid posture, her styled grey hair catching the cold candlelight as she looked down her nose at the young mother.
"A woman should earn her place," Eleanor said firmly, her tone glacial and unyielding, cutting through the silence of the room like a shard of ice.
Julian didn't look at his mother. Instead, he crossed the polished hardwood floor in two heavy strides, setting the champagne glass down with a sharp clink on a side table. Without a word of hesitation, he stepped forward and pulled Clara and the infant into a firm, protective embrace, shielding them from the predatory stares of the assembled relatives. He buried his face briefly in her shoulder, breathing in the scent of baby powder and lavender before pulling back just enough to look deep into her eyes.
"Get out of my house," Julian told the entire dining room, his voice echoing with absolute finality.
Eleanor stood up from her chair, her eyes narrowing as she pointed a manicured finger directly at Clara.
"You are throwing away your birthright for a penniless girl who doesn't even know how to hold her tongue," Eleanor hissed, stepping closer.
Julian stepped between them, his eyes dark. "No, Mother. I am finally throwing away the poison you served at this table."

Clara clutched Julian's arm, whispering in a panic. "Julian, wait, look at the legal papers on the sideboard before we leave."
