Chapter 7 - The Steel Briefcase

The fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across the dusty floorboards of the cabin. Julian walked slowly toward the wooden table, his eyes fixed on the weathered steel briefcase resting beside Arthur’s pipe. The metal surface was scratched and tarnished by years of neglect, but the brass combination lock gleamed cleanly in the firelight.

"How do we know this isn't another trap, Arthur?" Julian asked, keeping a cautious distance as he glanced back at Clara and the sleeping infant. "Why should I trust you after you disappeared for five years without a single word to anyone?"

Arthur let out a dry, raspy chuckle, tapping the ashes of his pipe against the stone hearth.

"If I wanted to sell you out to your mother, Julian, I wouldn't be freezing in this remote cabin waiting for you to stumble out here in the middle of the night," Arthur replied, his sharp eyes meeting Julian’s with unyielding sincerity. "I knew Eleanor would eventually come for your share of the estate once you refused to play the dutiful corporate heir. She always eliminates any loose ends that threaten her absolute control."

Clara stepped closer, adjusting the baby carrier as Leo stirred and let out a soft yawn. "What is actually inside that briefcase, Arthur?"

"The original, unredacted last will and testament of your grandfather, Thomas Sterling, along with bank transfer records from twenty years ago proving that Eleanor systematically emptied your late father’s independent trust account to fund her own secret acquisitions," Arthur explained, leaning forward in his rocking chair. "With these documents, the corporate board doesn't just lose its voting proxy—Eleanor faces immediate criminal indictment for fraud and grand larceny."

Julian reached out, his fingers brushing the cool metal of the briefcase. "What’s the combination?"

"Your grandfather’s birthday, formatted backwards, followed by the year he purchased this cabin," Arthur said smoothly.

Julian punched in the digits without hesitation: 4-5-1-9-8-2. With a sharp, mechanical click, the brass latches sprang open. Julian lifted the lid, revealing stacks of brittle paper, handwritten journal entries, and digitized microfiche cards neatly organized inside protective plastic sleeves. He pulled out the top document, his eyes scanning the familiar, elegant handwriting of his grandfather. It was all there, detailing the exact corporate structures Eleanor had spent decades manipulating.

Suddenly, the sharp glare of high-beam headlights cut through the cabin windows, painting the interior walls in a stark, blinding white. The sound of heavy vehicle engines idling outside echoed loudly over the crackling of the fire.

Arthur’s face drained of color. "They found us."
