Chapter 6

The dull thud of the light gray designer handbag hitting the polished hardwood floor echoed sharply against the restaurant’s ambient jazz. The two men in dark suits stopped two paces away from the table, their quiet authority cutting through the remaining tension like a scalpel. They didn't look at Arthur, nor did they acknowledge Valeria or Julian; their focus was locked entirely on the woman in the burgundy dress.
"Elena Vance?" the taller agent asked, his voice low and devoid of theatricality.
Elena stepped back, her heel catching on the edge of her own chair before she steadied herself. Her face had lost all its color, the dark makeup under her eyes suddenly looking stark against her pale skin. "There must be some mistake. I'm leaving. This is a private civil matter."
"Mrs. Vance, you are named in a federal warrant issued thirty minutes ago by the United States District Court," the second agent continued, stepping forward to block the most direct path to the exit. He produced a small leather folder, flashing the silver badge inside with practiced efficiency. "You are required to accompany us for questioning regarding wire fraud, interstate extortion, and document falsification."
The restaurant, usually a sanctuary for quiet corporate deals and high-end dining, fell into an absolute, breathless hush. Diners at nearby tables lowered their silverware, their eyes darting between the federal agents and the elegant woman in the burgundy dress.
Arthur remained seated, his calm demeanor unchanged as he glanced down at his wristwatch, checking the time with the casual indifference of a man waiting for a train. "Take your time, gentlemen. But let her pick up her bag. It contains several items belonging to the corporate trust."
Elena’s chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths. She looked at Julian, her expression shifting from panic to raw, desperate fury. "You did this! You planned the exact minute for them to walk in! You absolute monster!"
Julian didn't flinch. He looked down at his hands, his stubbled jaw tight. "I didn't plan the timing, Elena. The federal investigators did. They’ve been tracking the offshore transfers since the day you filed for divorce."
Valeria reached down, picking up the light gray designer handbag from the floor. She dusted off the fine leather with a handkerchief pulled from her cream blazer pocket, her movements maddeningly unhurried. She held it out toward the federal agent, who accepted it with a nod.
"Inside the front pocket, you'll find the secondary flash drive containing the decrypted communication logs between Mrs. Vance and her offshore shell company," Valeria said clearly, her voice carrying across the silent dining room.
The agent unzipped the front pocket, slid his fingers inside, and pulled out a small black USB drive. He slipped it into an evidence pouch without breaking eye contact with Elena.

"Mrs. Vance, turn around and place your hands behind your back," the agent instructed, his tone non-negotiable.
Elena’s legs trembled. For a second, it looked as though she might try to bolt toward the kitchen doors, but the second agent stepped smoothly into her path, his hand resting near his belt.
