Chapter 13

The sudden vibration of Julian’s phone against his thigh broke the quiet stillness of the forty-second-floor elevator lobby. He pulled the device from his pocket, the glowing screen displaying an incoming call with a rigid, unfamiliar international country code: +41 – Zurich, Switzerland.
Julian paused, his finger hovering over the screen. Valeria and Arthur stopped beside him, the elevator doors sliding open silently with a soft pneumatic chime, waiting for them to step inside.
"Who is calling you from Switzerland at this hour?" Arthur asked, narrowing his gray eyes slightly as he watched the screen flash.
"I don't know," Julian replied, his brow furrowing. He swiped the green accept icon and pressed the phone to his ear. "Hello?"
"Mr. Julian Vance?" a crisp, heavily accented voice responded immediately. It sounded professional, cold, and rigidly formal—the unmistakable tone of a European private banking executive. "This is Director Hans Mueller of Zurich Continental Trust. I am calling regarding the secondary asset portfolio tied to your former spouse, Mrs. Elena Vance."
Julian stiffened, stepping back out of the elevator car. Valeria turned sharply toward him, her dark reddish-brown hair swaying against the collar of her cream blazer as her sharp instincts flared instantly.
"What about the secondary portfolio?" Julian demanded, his voice tightening. "I thought all offshore accounts associated with her name were frozen under the federal injunction issued earlier this evening."
"Domestically within the United States jurisdiction, yes," Director Mueller replied smoothly, the faint sound of paper rustling coming through the speaker. "However, thirty-five minutes ago—just before her detention by federal authorities—an automated proxy server routed a high-priority liquidation request from her mobile device to transfer the remaining liquid capital of four point two million dollars into an unlisted bearer account in the Cayman Islands."
Julian’s breath hitched. He looked at Valeria, horror washing over him as the full implications of the call registered. "She had a fail-safe. Even in custody, she managed to trigger the final transfer."
"Correction, Mr. Vance," the Swiss banker continued calmly. "Our automated compliance protocols flagged the transfer as suspicious due to the pending federal fraud alert matching your family registry. The funds did not leave our vault. They are currently locked in an escrow holding account. However, under Swiss banking privacy laws, we require an authorized signature from the primary trust holder to permanently freeze and repatriate the capital back to Arthur & Sons Global Trust."
Arthur stepped closer, his face hardening into an expression of intense focus. He gestured for Julian to put the call on speakerphone so he could hear every word.
Julian tapped the speaker icon, holding the phone steady between them. "Director Mueller, what is required to execute the repatriation immediately?"
"We require biometric verification and a secured digital signature from you, Mr. Vance, authenticated through our Zurich portal within the next two hours," the banker stated flatly. "Otherwise, by midnight Swiss time, the legal loophole activates, and the four point two million dollars will be legally released to the bearer account."

Valeria’s eyes flashed with fierce urgency. She opened her tablet, her fingers flying across the screen with breathtaking speed. "Put them on the secure satellite uplink, Julian. We have to route the biometric authentication through the corporate mainframe before the Swiss firewall closes."
Julian didn't hesitate. He held the phone up, his voice steady and resolute. "Send the portal link right now, Director. We are logging in from the executive terminal."
