Chapter 11

The glowing blue light from Marcus’s dual monitors cast sharp shadows across his pale, sweating face. He stared at Julian through the soundproof glass of the corner office, his hand trembling as he set the coffee mug down so hard the dark liquid sloshed over the rim.
Julian didn't knock. He simply reached out, swiped his master administrator card against the exterior wall scanner, and the heavy glass door clicked open with a sharp, pneumatic release.
The sound of the door unlatching seemed to break Marcus out of his paralysis. He lunged across his desk, his fingers clawing desperately toward his keyboard to abort the file-deletion script that was currently scrubbing the server logs. "Julian! Man, you startled me. What are you doing here this late? I was just—I was running a routine system diagnostic for tomorrow's board meeting."
Julian didn't rush. He walked into the office with deliberate, agonizingly slow steps, his shoes making a soft, muted sound against the carpet. He stopped three feet from the desk, looking down at the scrolling progress bar on the primary monitor.
System Wipe: 78% Complete.
"Routine diagnostic, Marcus?" Julian’s voice was dangerously quiet, lacking any trace of the panic or confusion that had defined him earlier that evening. "Strange time of night to be running a total server wipe on the international wire transfer registry."
Marcus swallowed hard, his throat bobbing visibly as he forced a tight, unconvincing laugh. He wiped his sweaty palms against his trousers. "You know how these legacy systems are, Julian. Little memory leaks here and there. Better to clean house before the auditors arrive in the morning. Say, where is Elena? She said she was meeting you for dinner to finalize the property settlement."
Julian tilted his head slightly, a cold smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Elena is currently enjoying the hospitality of the federal detention center downtown. Apparently, she forgot to read the fine print on her wire transfers."
The color drained entirely from Marcus’s face. The forced smile vanished, replaced by an expression of trapped panic. His eyes darted toward the floor-to-ceiling windows behind his desk, as if calculating the impossible distance to the street forty-two floors below.
"Federal... federal detention?" Marcus stammered, his voice cracking. "What does that have to do with me? I'm just an analyst. I process the numbers you sign off on!"
Valeria stepped into the office, her professional green dress and cream blazer cutting a sharp silhouette against the glowing screens. She placed a sleek black tablet onto the corner of Marcus’s desk, tapping the screen once to bring up an encrypted file.
"You didn't just process numbers, Marcus," Valeria said, her tone clinical and devastatingly precise. "You generated the duplicate master credentials, routed the offshore shell company signatures through your personal residential IP address, and provided Elena with the precise internal schedule required to execute the fraudulent asset transfers."
Marcus backed away from his desk until his thighs hit the edge of his ergonomic chair. He looked between Julian and Valeria, realizing the trap was completely shut. There was no exit, no alibi, and no way to outrun the digital trail.
"She forced me," Marcus blurted out, his voice rising in desperate self-preservation. "Elena threatened to expose my gambling debts to the board if I didn't help her access the portal! I didn't want any part of it, Julian! I swear to God!"
Julian stepped closer, leaning over the desk so that his face was inches from Marcus’s terrified eyes. "You didn't want any part of it? You bled my family's legacy for fourteen months while pretending to be my friend."
Marcus whimpered, shrinking back into his chair as the progress bar on his monitor flashed a bright, mocking green.
