Chapter 3

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The light gray designer handbag suddenly felt like lead in her grip, heavy enough to drag her down into a pit of financial and legal ruin. She had rushed through the thirty-page divorce settlement three days ago, blinded by greed, eager to secure the deed to Julian’s apartment, his car, and his corporate accounts. She hadn't hired an independent lawyer; she had used Julian’s corporate counsel, trusting that his cowardice would keep him from fighting back.
"What clause?" Elena forced the words out, trying desperately to reclaim her haughty demeanor, though her voice trembled despite her best efforts. "I have a signed and notarized decree. The judge stamped it. It's final."
Arthur offered a faint, humorless smile, adjusting his pocket square with agonizing slowness. "Final for a standard marital dissolution, yes. But Julian isn't just a mid-level manager at my holding firm, despite what he let you believe to keep his life quiet. He is a junior partner in the Arthur & Sons Global Trust. And under Article Nine of our family charter, any spouse who initiates a divorce under fraudulent pretenses—such as hiding assets or fabricating debt—forfeits all claims to family-linked property."
Elena spun around to face Julian, her eyes wide with shock and fury. "You lied to me! You told me you were drowning in debt! You let me believe the apartment was yours to give!"
Julian looked away, his shoulders slumping further inside his gray suit jacket. "I lied because you threatened to ruin my career if I didn't hand over everything. I had to protect my family's legacy from your extortion. Valeria helped me structure the exit strategy."
Realization crashed over Elena like a tidal wave. Valeria wasn't Julian's new girlfriend. She was the family’s legal strategist, brought in specifically to dismantle Elena’s predatory claims piece by piece. The dinner wasn't a romantic date; it was an ambush staged to deliver the final legal blow in person.
"You set me up," Elena whispered, the burgundy dress feeling less like armor and more like a straitjacket. "You both orchestrated this whole thing."
Valeria took a half-step forward, closing the distance between them with chilling professional poise. Her dark reddish-brown hair swayed gently against her cream blazer. "We didn't set you up, Elena. We simply stopped running. You built your entire marriage on extortion, and you built your divorce on fraud. Did you really think my father would let you walk away with millions in family-held capital?"
Elena’s grip on the handbag slipped slightly. She looked around the restaurant. Several patrons were watching them with quiet interest. The humiliation burned hotter than her anger. She had to salvage something, anything, from the wreckage before the police or investigators got involved.

"I'll fight this in court," Elena snarled, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "I'll expose your family's dirty corporate secrets to the press."
Arthur chuckled, a dry, dismissive sound. "Go ahead, my dear. Try talking to reporters when your own bank accounts were frozen an hour ago."
