Chapter 4

The words hung in the air, cold and absolute. Elena’s hand instinctively flew to her shoulder, her fingers tightening around the strap of the light gray handbag as if hoping the leather could shield her from reality. Her mind raced back to her morning routine—the frantic check of her mobile banking app, the numbers scrolling across the screen, the satisfying sight of six figures sitting comfortably in her personal checking account.

Or at least, they had been there this morning.

"You're bluffing," Elena spat, though the conviction in her voice was visibly cracking. She pulled her phone from the designer bag with a frantic jerk, her long fingernails tapping aggressively against the glass screen. She opened the banking application, her password saved by biometric recognition.

The screen flashed white, loading for three agonizing seconds before a stark red banner appeared across the top: ACCOUNT TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED PENDING FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

Below it, her available balance read zero.

"No," Elena breathed, her eyes darting across the digital interface. She clicked on her savings account, only to find the same freezing notice staring back at her. "No, this isn't possible. You can't just freeze my money! That was part of the settlement!"

Valeria watched her with an unreadable expression, her hands resting calmly on the table. The gold hoop earrings caught the warm light as she tilted her head. "Settlements obtained through coercion and falsified financial disclosure are legally void, Elena. My father’s legal team filed an emergency injunction at two o'clock this afternoon. By three, every asset tied to the fraudulent transfer was flagged."

Julian finally lifted his head, his stubbled jaw tight. The anxiety that had defined his posture earlier had shifted into something resembling quiet relief, though his eyes remained heavy with the exhaustion of a man who had lived too long in fear. "I tried to warn you to walk away cleanly while you still had your own salary, Elena. I offered you a fair separation months ago. But you wanted everything. You wanted to bleed me dry."

"Shut up!" Elena shrieked, the thin veneer of her sophisticated composure shattering completely. Heads turned at adjacent tables, and a nearby waiter took a hesitant step forward before pausing under Arthur’s steady, authoritative glare.

Elena pointed a trembling finger at Julian, her face contorting with rage. "You pathetic coward! You think you've won? I know things about your corporate accounts—things that would land you and your precious father in federal prison for tax evasion!"

Arthur did not blink. He buttoned the final button of his navy blue blazer, his posture straight and unyielding. "My corporate accounts have been audited annually by federal regulators for four decades, young lady. If there were irregularities, your amateurish blackmail attempts would have been handled by the FBI long before you bought that dress."

Elena swallowed hard, panic threatening to override her senses. She looked down at the designer handbag once more, the accessory that had felt like a trophy just ten minutes ago now feeling like evidence.

Valeria took a slow step closer, her green dress rustling softly against the linen table runner. "You're holding the wrong bag, Elena," she said softly. "The real documents aren't in there. They're already on the prosecutor's desk."
