Chapter 1

The warm, amber illumination of the upscale downtown restaurant cast long, sophisticated shadows across the linen-clothed tables, but the sudden chill in the atmosphere had nothing to do with the air conditioning. Elena stood tall in her sleeveless burgundy dress, her fingers curled tightly around her light gray designer handbag like a shield. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, framing a face cold with unmistakable mockery.

Beside her, Julian shifted nervously in his gray suit jacket over a beige shirt, his styled blond hair slightly disheveled by sweat despite the cool room. He reached out an anxious hand, his stubbled jaw clenching as he tried to pull her back.

Across the table, Valeria sat with terrifying composure. Her professional green dress and cream blazer radiated quiet confidence, contrasting sharply with Elena’s performative fury. Beside her, Julian’s father, Arthur, adjusted the cuffs of his navy blue blazer, his silver hair catching the amber light as he watched the unfolding scene with detached dignity.

"Three days divorced and already found a rich older man?" Elena’s voice cut through the soft jazz playing in the background, sharp and laced with bitter triumph.

Valeria didn't flinch. She kept her gaze steady, looking down at the table for a brief, calculated second before lifting her eyes.

Elena slammed her hand down lightly, her large diamond watch catching the light. "Careful, sir, Valeria is very good at looking innocent."

Julian swallowed hard, his eyes darting between his ex-wife and his father. He shook his head slightly, a deep crease forming between his brows. "You don't have to expose yourself like this, Valeria."

Arthur leaned forward, buttoning his jacket with slow, deliberate precision. He looked directly at Julian and Elena, his voice carrying the calm authority of a man who owned half the city's commercial real estate. "Dad, let's go. To avoid further confusion is my daughter..."

Before Arthur could finish explaining the bloodline connection that Julian had desperately tried to hide from his grasping ex-wife, Valeria stood up. She rose slowly, closing the physical distance with a predator’s grace, her eyes locking onto Elena’s fading smirk.

"Take good care of it," Valeria whispered, her voice dangerously low yet filling the entire dining room. "You seem to like things other women already decided to leave behind."

Elena's face drained of color as she suddenly realized the light gray handbag in her hand was no ordinary gift, but part of a much larger inventory.
