Chapter 8: The Pediatrician's Office

The sterile, fluorescent lights of Dr. Lawrence Hayes’s private pediatric clinic hummed softly in the quiet morning air. The waiting room was filled with pastel-colored chairs, wooden toys, and framed illustrations of smiling animals, creating an eerie juxtaposition against the dark intent burning in Marcus’s mind. Marcus pushed open the door to the inner examination rooms, his heavy boots making no sound on the linoleum floor. He bypassed the reception desk entirely, moving with the relentless precision of a predator closing in on its wounded prey. He reached the end of the hallway and shoved open the door to Lawrence’s private office without knocking. Dr. Hayes sat behind his mahogany desk, neatly organizing patient charts, looking entirely unbothered by the early morning intrusion.

Lawrence looked up slowly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with a calm, practiced serenity that only fueled Marcus’s boiling rage. “Marcus. This is highly irregular. Clinic hours don't start for another two hours. Is Ethan experiencing a reaction from the party?” Lawrence asked smoothly, his voice devoid of any genuine panic. Marcus walked across the room, planting both tattooed hands flat on the desk and leaning in close, his face shadowed by the overhead lamp. “Cut the medical detachment, Lawrence. You were at the house. You’ve treated my children since they were infants. You knew the layout, you knew the staff schedules, and you knew exactly when the security cameras had a blind spot.” Lawrence didn’t flinch. He simply folded his hands neatly over the patient files, offering a chillingly polite smile.

“I was there to check on Lily’s mild allergic cough, Marcus. As a family doctor, my presence in your home is hardly a crime,” Lawrence replied, his voice terrifyingly steady. Marcus’s chest heaved as he fought the urge to level the entire office. Lily’s words echoed in his ears—*A man touched Ethan’s cake. He said nobody would know. Find him.* The psychological warfare being waged against his family wasn't about extortion or corporate rivalry; it was deeply personal, targeting the innocence of his children through a trusted figure who viewed them as experimental subjects in a much larger, darker game. Marcus leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. “If you ever come within a mile of my family again, Lawrence, no amount of medical degrees will put you back together.” He stood up straight, turning on his heel, knowing that while Lawrence possessed the motive and access, the missing piece of the puzzle lay somewhere deep within the estate’s encrypted archives.
