Chapter 6: The First Confrontation

The heavy iron gates of Julian Vance’s estate swung open with a smooth, automated hum as Marcus’s black SUV glided up the winding driveway. The early morning fog clung to the manicured lawns like a damp shroud, muting the opulent architecture of the mansion. Marcus stepped out into the chill, adjusting the cuffs of his pristine white shirt. His tattooed forearms flexed as he walked briskly toward the grand double doors, his face carved from stone. He didn’t bother ringing the bell; instead, he struck the heavy wood with three resonant, authoritative blows that echoed through the empty foyer. Within moments, the deadbolt clicked, and Julian Vance appeared wearing a plush silk bathrobe, looking bewildered and thoroughly annoyed by the ungodly hour.
“Marcus? What in the world—?” Julian started, his sleepy eyes widening slightly as he took in Marcus’s intimidating physical presence and the cold fury burning in his eyes. Without waiting for an invitation, Marcus stepped hard across the threshold, using his sheer mass to force Julian backward into his own entryway. The door slammed shut behind them with a heavy thud. “Cut the act, Julian,” Marcus growled, his voice a low, vibrating bass that commanded absolute terror. He reached into his pocket and slammed the tungsten cufflink down onto the polished marble entryway table, letting it spin to a stop inches from Julian’s chest. “Recognize that? It was picked up off the floor right where someone tried to poison my son’s birthday.”
Julian stared down at the small piece of metal, his face instantly draining of color. His jaw twitched, and for a fleeting second, fear flashed in his eyes before he quickly rearranged his features into an offended sneer. “Are you out of your mind, Marcus? I lost that cufflink at the charity gala last weekend! You’re accusing me of harming Ethan over a piece of jewelry?” Marcus stepped closer, towering over the shorter man until Julian was forced to lean back against the wall. The sheer intimidation radiating from Marcus’s white-shirted frame was suffocating. “If I find out you had anything to do with that cake, Julian, your money and your lawyers won't be able to buy you enough oxygen to finish your next breath. Keep your distance from my family.” Marcus spun on his heel, leaving Julian trembling against the wall in the cold, silent dawn.
