Chapter 12: A Reckoning in the Dark

Victor stopped dead in his tracks a few feet inside the dining room, his gaze locking onto Marcus’s towering, imposing frame. The pale moonlight outlined the jagged tattoos curling up Marcus’s neck, creating a terrifying silhouette against the polished hardwood floor. Victor slowly slid his hands into his jacket pockets, his smile faltering only slightly before returning with a cold, mocking edge. “You always were difficult to get rid of, Marcus. I must admit, I expected you to be tearing your family apart by now. Instead, you’re standing here waiting for me like a gracious host.” Marcus didn't move a muscle. His voice, when it finally broke the heavy silence, was a low, vibrating growl that commanded the entire room. “You crossed a line when you touched my son’s cake, Victor. You brought my children into a war that ended five years ago.”

Victor chuckled softly, taking a slow step forward, entirely unbothered by the tactical disadvantage. “Children have a way of reminding us of our vulnerabilities, don't they? I wanted you to feel a fraction of the helplessness I felt when you locked me away in a federal cage while you played suburban house with your little blonde wife and your pristine white shirts.” In a fraction of a second, Marcus moved. Abandoning all restraint, he closed the distance between them with explosive speed, his massive hands reaching out to grab Victor by the lapels of his tailored suit. With raw, unbridled fury, Marcus hoisted the smaller man off the floor and slammed him hard against the edge of the mahogany dining table, sending the replica birthday cake crashing to the floor in a spray of white frosting and shattered tiers.

Victor gasped for breath, his hands grabbing frantically at Marcus’s powerful wrists as the crushing pressure on his chest threatened to break his ribs. But there was no fear in Victor’s eyes now—only a twisted sense of satisfaction. “You can break every bone in my body, Marcus, but you can’t undo what your daughter already knows. The seed of fear has been planted. They will never look at you the same way again.” Marcus pressed his forearm harder against Victor’s throat, his tattoos straining against his skin as the dark rage inside him screamed for a permanent end. Yet, as he looked down into Victor’s defiant face, he heard Lily’s tearful voice echoing in his mind—*Find him, Daddy. Keep us safe.* Marcus realized that destroying Victor in cold blood would only prove the monster right, fulfilling the cycle of violence he had fought so hard to leave behind.
