Chapter 3: The Blind Spots

The glowing blue monitors of the estate’s security hub illuminated the small, windowless basement room in eerie flashes of light. Marcus stood directly behind the lead security technician, his massive frame casting a heavy shadow over the control console. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the intricate tribal tattoos curling up his neck—a visual reminder of his unpredictable past before he traded street survival for corporate dominance. Elena stood near the door, her arms crossed tightly over her light blue dress, shivering despite the ambient warmth of the room. They had spent the last hour reviewing every angle of the estate’s perimeter cameras, searching for the ghost Lily had so vividly described. But the screens showed only empty corridors, manicured lawns swaying in the night breeze, and the quiet hum of automated lights.

“Sir, the feeds from the western terrace and the pantry hallway show a three-minute gap,” the technician muttered, his fingers flying anxiously across the mechanical keyboard. He didn’t dare look up into Marcus’s intense, unblinking stare. Marcus leaned in closer, his knuckles pressing hard against the cold metal edge of the console until his skin turned white. A three-minute gap in a high-security residential network was not a glitch; it was a deliberate backdoor. Someone with administrative credentials had disabled those specific cameras just long enough to slip inside the house, approach the dessert table, and contaminate Ethan’s cake. The realization sent a fresh wave of ice through Marcus’s veins, replacing his previous anger with a calculated, lethal focus.

Elena stepped forward, her voice tight with rising panic. “Marcus, are you saying someone on our payroll helped this person get inside? How is that even possible?” Marcus did not answer immediately. He remembered Lily’s tear-stained face, her terrified warning that a man had touched the cake and whispered that nobody would ever know. It meant the intruder was arrogant, familiar with the estate’s layout, and confident that he could vanish without a trace. Marcus straightened up, rolling his broad shoulders as he cracked his knuckles. He ordered the technician to isolate the encrypted administrative logs from the past week, leaving no digital stone unturned. If someone inside his fortress had betrayed them, Marcus intended to find them before the sun rose, and he would ensure they regretted the very day they learned his address.
