Chapter 10: The Ghost from the Past

The heavy oak doors of the study seemed to close in around Marcus as he stared at the red-circled name in the old ledger: Victor Sterling. The name alone carried the weight of a graveyard. Five years ago, Marcus had dismantled an international syndicate trafficking in classified intelligence, leaving Victor to take the fall for a network of high-level corruption. Victor had vanished into the federal prison system during the trial, rumored to have died in a prison riot three years into his sentence. But dead men didn't walk into high-security estates in bespoke suits, leaving custom cufflinks and whispering chilling threats to young children about stolen cakes. Marcus clenched his jaw, the tattoos on his arms tightening like coiled steel as he realized the federal prison report had been a carefully orchestrated fabrication designed to give Victor a clean slate for vengeance.

Elena stood up, walking around the desk to place a comforting hand on Marcus’s rigid shoulder. “He’s not just here for revenge, Marcus. If he wanted you dead, you would have died in the kitchen yesterday. He’s playing a psychological game. He wants to watch you unravel, piece by piece, until you destroy your own family from the inside out out of sheer paranoia.” Marcus looked at his wife, seeing the raw terror she was bravely masking for the sake of their children. She was right. The poisoned cake, the whispered threats to Lily, the planted clues—it was all designed to push Marcus over the edge, to make him strike out at innocent people until he stood completely isolated in the ruins of his own making.

“We aren't going to play his game,” Marcus said, his voice hard, resolute, and stripped of all hesitation. He reached down and scooped up the tungsten cufflink from the desk, slipping it into his pocket alongside his phone. He dialed a secure, direct frequency to his most trusted former operational unit—men who owed him their lives and answered to no corporate or legal oversight. “Pack your gear,” Marcus told the encrypted receiver without preamble. “The ghost has come home, and we are going to lay him to rest permanently.” He hung up before the other end could reply, turning his full, unwavering attention to protecting the two small children upstairs who were currently sleeping through a war they didn't even know they were fighting.
