Chapter 11: The Trap is Set

The sun dipped below the western hills, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and charcoal as the estate transformed into a silent, heavily guarded fortress. Elite tactical operatives moved quietly through the corridors, wearing matte black gear and thermal imaging headsets, blending into the darkened corners of the mansion. Marcus stood in the center of the living room, wearing a heavy black tactical vest over his white shirt, his tattooed forearms bare and ready for the impending conflict. Elena and the children had been safely relocated to an off-site, subterranean safe house two miles away, leaving Marcus completely alone to act as the ultimate bait. He knew Victor Sterling too well; a man with that level of narcissistic arrogance couldn't resist delivering the final blow in person.
In the dimly lit dining room, a replica of the ruined two-tier birthday cake had been placed back on the center table, exactly as it had been before the disaster. The unlit candles stood tall and mocking against the pristine white frosting. Marcus stood motionless beside the table, his eyes fixed on the grand French doors leading out to the dark terrace. The heavy silence was broken only by the rhythmic hum of the perimeter security monitors feeding data into his tactical earpiece. The trap was set, the digital vulnerabilities had been deliberately left open, and the bait was irresistible. All Marcus had to do was wait for the ghost to materialize out of the shadows and walk right into the crosshairs of a father’s final reckoning.
At precisely midnight, the automated exterior lights flickered once and died, plunging the terrace into absolute darkness. The subtle click of a latch sliding open echoed softly over the internal intercom. Marcus did not flinch; he simply exhaled slowly, steadying his breathing as the shadows near the French doors began to shift. A tall, slender figure stepped effortlessly across the threshold, dressed in an impeccably tailored dark suit with French cuffs catching the faint moonlight. Victor Sterling had arrived, wearing a calm, triumphant smile that vanished the second he realized Marcus was standing alone in the center of the room, waiting for him with the cold, unblinking focus of an executioner.
