Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Verified

The heavy thud of multiple pairs of boots struck the wooden porch planks in unison, sending a jarring vibration through the entire entryway of the suburban house. The pregnant woman tried to pull herself upright against the sofa, but her legs were completely spent, shaking uncontrollably as the second contraction gripped her with relentless agony.

"Stay down!" the older woman ordered fiercely, shifting her grip on the newborn infant while using her knee to brace the shaky wooden table against the splintering interior door. "If they see us here, we won't last ten seconds."

Through the wide-open front door, the silhouette of Mark appeared against the amber evening sky. He was no longer wearing his calm, indifferent expression; his face was twisted into a mask of cold anxiety as he gestured aggressively toward two hulking men standing behind him in matching gray shirts.

"I told you she'd be incapacitated," Mark’s voice carried clearly into the hallway, stripped of any marital pretense. "Just grab the kid from the first batch and secure the perimeter before the evening delivery van arrives from the highway."

The pregnant woman felt a cold wave of numbness wash over her chest, replacing the fiery pain of labor with a profound, suffocating emptiness. Three years of shared dinners, whispered promises, and affectionate smiles had been nothing more than a carefully scripted grooming process designed to deliver prime infants to a human trafficking ring operating out of a suburban front.

"You lied," she whispered bitterly, her lips trembling as she stared directly at her husband standing on the threshold. "Every single word was a lie."

"Business is business, Sarah," Mark replied coldly, stepping one foot across the threshold and peering into the dim hallway. "You were always just the incubator. Now where is the older woman? She wasn't supposed to still be active in sector four."

Before Mark could step fully into the hallway, the older woman reached out with blinding speed, snatching a heavy brass fireplace poker from its stand and slamming it down hard against the wooden floorboards with a deafening clang.

"Step back, Mark, or I take the second twin with me right now!" she roared, her voice echoing with deadly intent.
