Chapter 2 - The Eye in the Sky

From the vantage point of the security lens mounted high above the exterior molding, the cold plastic housing whirred softly as it tracked Mark’s hasty retreat toward the silver sedan. The driveway was bathed in the harsh, unfiltered light of early morning, casting long, distorted shadows across the freshly cut lawn.

Inside the frame of the digital monitor glowing softly in the basement office—an office whose existence had never been mentioned during three years of marriage—a second figure watched the live feed unfold. The screen flickered with static, framing Mark as he threw himself into the driver's seat without looking back.

Through the distorted microphone feed, the pregnant woman’s frantic gestures were captured in stark, silent desperation. Her blonde hair fell wildly across her face as she hammered her fists against the painted panels of the front door.

The man in the basement leaned closer to the monitor, his fingers tracing the edge of a jagged scar along his jawline. He watched Mark’s car execute a reckless three-point turn, the tires kicking up a spray of white limestone gravel that battered the side of the suburban house like buckshot.

The camera angle shifted slightly, controlled by an unseen hand on a joystick, zooming in tightly on the woman’s face through the exterior wide-angle lens. Her lips moved in silent supplication, forming words of betrayal that the audio feed picked up as a garbled, high-pitched screech.

"He's running," a raspy voice muttered in the dark room, the sound swallowed instantly by the hum of the hard drives recording every second of the abandonment.

On the screen, the woman’s knees finally buckled. She slid down the vertical plane of the door, her white t-shirt catching on a loose splinter, leaving a faint streak of dust as gravity claimed her body.

The man in the basement did not reach for a phone. He did not dial emergency services. Instead, he simply watched the playback buffer, rewinding the terrifying ten seconds where Mark locked the door from the outside, ensuring the trap was firmly shut.
