Chapter 14 - Into the Concrete Veins

The cool, damp air of the concrete drainage tunnel rushed over Sarah’s face as Arthur lowered her gently onto the smooth floor of the subterranean escape route. Behind them, the heavy metal access panel slammed shut with a resounding click that sealed off the polished wooden hallway of the suburban house just as the rumble of heavy truck tires echoed directly outside the front porch.

"Keep moving," Arthur urged softly, using one hand to steady Sarah’s back while cradling the first newborn safely against his chest with the other. "The syndicate extraction team is at the front door. They won't bother searching the drainage system unless the security monitors show our exit."

Martha followed closely behind them, carrying the second twin securely inside the folds of her green cardigan, her rubber-soled slippers pattering softly against the damp concrete. The tunnel was dimly lit by flickering emergency bulbs spaced every twenty feet along the curved ceiling, casting long, wavering shadows that danced across the damp walls.

Sarah gritted her teeth, ignoring the agonizing ache in her lower body as she crawled forward on her hands and knees, driven entirely by the primal need to protect her daughters. The echoes of heavy boots stomping across the wooden floorboards directly above their heads filtered down through the concrete slab, followed by the muffled, angry shouts of men realizing their trap had been sprung.

"They found the basement," Martha whispered over her shoulder, her voice tight with tension. "They know we took the emergency exit."

"Let them look," Arthur replied coldly, his strides lengthening as the tunnel began to slope upward toward a rusted iron grate set into the ceiling ahead. "That house was built as a cage, but every cage has a key for the ones who built it. And I helped pour the concrete for this very pipe twelve years ago before Mark locked me away."

Sarah’s breath came in ragged gasps as the pale light of day began to filter down through the iron grate up ahead, revealing the green canopy of a public park just beyond the residential cul-de-sac. They were almost out.

Suddenly, a loud mechanical whirring sound echoed from the tunnel wall behind them, followed by the blinding glare of an active security camera tracking their exact movement along the concrete conduit.
