Chapter 12 - The Rise from the Depths

The splintered interior door at the far end of the hallway burst open completely with a deafening crash, the broken wooden panels flying across the floorboards and striking the guard’s legs just as he reached for the newborn. The man cursed loudly, stumbling backward and losing his footing on the polished oak.

From the dark, yawning maw of the basement stairwell, a tall, gaunt figure emerged into the amber light of the hallway. Clad in tattered gray clothing with long, unkempt gray hair framing a face carved with deep, jagged scars, the man moved with an eerie, mechanical precision that made Mark freeze in his tracks on the porch.

"Arthur?" Mark gasped, his face draining of all color as he stared at the newcomer in absolute disbelief. "No... that's impossible. We locked you down there five years ago!"

The gaunt man did not speak. He raised a heavy iron pipe in his right hand, his eyes locked entirely on Mark with a cold, terrifying emptiness that spoke of a decade spent in subterranean isolation. Without a word of warning, Arthur lunged forward across the hallway, ignoring the guards entirely, and brought the iron pipe crashing down directly across Mark’s knee.

A bone-shattering crack echoed through the suburban house, followed by Mark’s high-pitched, agonizing shriek as he collapsed onto the porch, clutching his mangled leg.

"Get him out of here!" one of the guards yelled, abandoning the attempt to snatch the newborns as he panicked at the sudden appearance of the basement prisoner. He grabbed Mark by the collar of his gray shirt, dragging his writhing body backward down the porch steps toward the idling silver sedan parked in the driveway.

The second guard scrambled after them, diving into the passenger seat as the sedan’s tires squealed violently against the gravel, kicking up a blinding cloud of white limestone dust that battered the exterior walls of the house.

In the hallway, silence descended once more, broken only by the soft, overlapping cries of the two newborn twins clutched tightly against Sarah’s chest.

Martha slumped to the floor, panting heavily, while Arthur stood motionless over the wreckage of the interior door, his chest heaving as he stared down at the bloodstain on the floorboards.
