Chapter 8 - The First Cry

The tiny, fragile sound of the newborn's wail echoed sharply down the narrow corridor, cutting through the ambient hum of the security monitors still recording from the basement. The older woman reacted instantly, scooping the squirming infant into the folds of her green cardigan, her weathered hands moving with practiced, frantic precision to clear the baby's airway.

"It's a girl," the older woman whispered, a rare, genuine smile briefly softening the harsh lines of her face before vanishing into sheer terror as the heavy rattling at the interior door resumed with sudden violence.

The man on the other side of the hidden partition threw his shoulder against the wood, the frame groaning loudly under the sudden impact. Splinters rained down onto the polished oak floorboards, showering the area where the second twin was still fighting to make its descent.

"Quiet her!" the pregnant woman gasped, her voice hoarse and weak as she clutched her still-swollen abdomen. The second contraction was already building, sharper and heavier than the first, demanding an immediate push that she feared her shattered body could not endure.

"I have her," the older woman murmured, pressing the crying infant gently against her own chest while using her free hand to shove a heavy oak side table against the vibrating interior door. "Focus on yourself. The second one is turning. She's coming right now."

Outside on the porch, the wind picked up, howling through the open front door and scattering loose leaves across the threshold. The silver sedan Mark had driven away in moments ago suddenly crept back into view on the exterior security monitor, its headlights killing their beams as it pulled silently back into the driveway without turning off the engine.

Mark was back. But he wasn't alone.

Through the distorted audio feed, heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel walkway, accompanied by the low, murmuring voices of at least two other men wearing identical gray long-sleeve shirts.

"They're walking up the steps," the pregnant woman whispered, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she stared past the older woman toward the open front door. "Mark brought them back to finish it."
