Chapter 5 - Uninvited Guests

The heavy thud of heavy boots marching across the manor's hardwood foyer shattered the tense silence of the hidden room. Mark froze, his hand instinctively reaching out to push Sarah and Leo further back into the shadows of the alcove. The air grew suddenly frigid, the casual atmosphere of a quiet afternoon afternoon evaporating into a dangerous, volatile reality.

"Stay here," Mark whispered fiercely, his eyes locked on the dark library doorway leading back into the house. "Don't make a sound."

"Mark, no, those aren't police officers," Sarah hissed, her fingers gripping his forearm with bone-crushing strength. Her face was stark white, her eyes wide with a terrifying intuition. "No one knocks like that. They knew we were here."

Arthur’s face drained of the last remaining traces of color. The old man—whoever he truly was—let out a low groan, sinking back into his chair as if the new threat had finally broken his remaining spirit.

"They found the deed," Arthur muttered, his voice barely audible over the approaching footsteps. "After thirty years, they finally traced the foundation records."

"Who?" Mark demanded, his voice rising in panic as a heavy shadow fell across the library threshold. "Dad, who is coming?!"

Before an answer could be formed, a tall, imposing figure stepped into the library. The stranger wore a tailored dark suit that contrasted sharply with the rustic charm of the room. His face was obscured by the dim lighting, but the glint of a silver wristwatch and the absolute confidence in his stride signaled a dangerous level of authority. Behind him, two larger men in similar black suits fanned out, their eyes scanning the room with cold, calculating efficiency.

"Arthur, or should I call you Thomas?" the lead man spoke, his voice smooth, cultured, and chillingly polite. He stopped near the reading table, casually tapping a leather-bound book with gloved fingers. "It seems your little family reunion has gone on long enough. Time to settle old debts."

Sarah gasped, pulling Leo tightly against her chest, shielding the trembling boy’s eyes from the intruders. Mark stepped forward, placing himself between his family and the strangers, his jaw clenched, his knuckles white.

"Get out of my house," Mark ordered, his voice trembling slightly despite his best efforts to sound commanding. "Who the hell are you and what do you want?"

The man in the suit offered a cold, mirthless smile, slow and deliberate. He didn't look at Mark; instead, his gaze slid past him, fixing directly on the dark opening of the hidden room and the captive tied to the chair inside.

"Your father forgot to mention one important detail," the man said softly, stepping closer to the hidden door. "The man he locked away in the wall isn't just a stranger. He's the rightful owner of this entire estate—and the man who murdered my grandfather."
