Chapter 12 - The Underground Tunnels

The sharp crackle of the radio transmission cut through the heavy silence of the library like a knife. Every head turned toward the hallway leading to the back of the house, where the ancient stone stairs descended into darkness.

"What do you mean, someone is coming up?" Eleanor demanded, spinning around to face the tactical officer, her icy composure instantly replaced by sharp alertness.

"Sensors on the lower drainage grate just triggered, Director," the officer reported rapidly, his rifle raised and ready. "Someone is moving through the old smuggling tunnels beneath the manor. We've got movement heading directly toward the root cellar."

Jonathan stepped forward, his expression hardening into predatory focus. "The tunnels were sealed in nineteen-ninety-two. Only Thomas and David knew the access codes to the bulkhead." He shot a suspicious glare toward the hidden alcove. "Unless someone else has been using them."

David, still bound partially to the old chair in the dark room, shook his head frantically, his chains rattling. "Not me! I haven't moved from this room in thirty years! I didn't even know the grates were still functional!"

Mark stared at his father, his chest heaving with a mix of fury and disbelief. "Dad? Is there another way in? Who else knows about these tunnels?"

Arthur closed his eyes for a long moment, swaying slightly on his feet before letting out a heavy, defeated sigh. "The man who helped me build the wall," Arthur whispered, the words barely audible. "The contractor... Victor. He swore he would take the secret to his grave. But if he's down there..."

"Victor died twenty years ago," Jonathan interrupted sharply, his eyes narrowing. "His construction firm went bankrupt, and he vanished off the grid."

"People like Victor don't vanish," Eleanor said coldly, pulling a sleek, matte-black sidearm from her trench coat holster and checking the magazine with a practiced click. She looked at her tactical team. "Form a two-man wedge. Clear the root cellar and secure those tunnels immediately. If anyone comes up those stairs, do not hesitate."

"Wait!" Mark shouted, stepping in front of the armed operatives. "My son is in this house! You can't just start a firefight in our home!"

"Mr. Miller, step aside," Eleanor ordered, her voice absolute and unyielding. "Your father's past just breached our perimeter. If you want to keep your family safe, let us do our job."

Sarah gently pulled Mark back, her eyes wide with terror as she gripped his arm. "Let them go, Mark. We need to get out of here. Pack a bag, grab Leo, and let's get out of this cursed house right now."

Before Mark could answer, a loud, metallic screech echoed from beneath the floorboards, followed by the dull sound of heavy boots clanking against the old stone steps of the root cellar.

"Contact!" the lead tactical officer roared, raising his rifle as he aimed squarely down the dark corridor.

The heavy cellar door at the end of the hall began to shudder violently, as if something immense and desperate was trying to claw its way up into the light.
