Chapter 14 - The Smoke and the Truth

The thick, acrid green smoke billowed outward in violent plumes, instantly swallowing the library in an impenetrable, choking fog. Coughing violently, Mark waved his hands frantically to clear the air, his eyes stinging and watering as panic gripped his chest.
"Leo! Sarah! Grab my hand!" Mark shouted through the smoke, his voice straining over the chaos.
"I've got him! Mark, I can't see the door!" Sarah yelled back, her voice muffled and terrified from somewhere near the reading table.
Through the swirling green haze, the sounds of shouting, the clatter of heavy equipment, and the heavy thud of scuffling bodies filled the room. Eleanor and her tactical team moved with ruthless efficiency, their muffled commands cutting through the din as they engaged Victor in the center of the room.
"Suspect is down! Get the cuffs on him!" Eleanor's voice rang out, sharp and commanding.
Mark stumbled forward, his hands grazing the mahogany desk before finally connecting with Sarah's shoulder. He pulled her and trembling young Leo into a tight embrace, backing away from the thickest part of the smoke toward the relative safety of the hallway.
"Are you okay? Did he touch you?" Mark asked frantically, checking Leo over in the dim light of the corridor.
"I'm scared, Dad," Leo whimpered, burying his face in Mark's dark blue sweater. "Make the bad men go away."
As the ventilation system of the historic manor finally kicked in, slowly sucking the green smoke toward the ceiling vents, the chaos in the library began to subside. Victor was pinned to the floor by two tactical operatives, a pair of heavy steel handcuffs locked tightly around his wrists. He was coughing and spitting blood, his scarred face twisted in a defiant grin.
A few feet away, Arthur had collapsed completely against the wall, sliding down until he sat flat on the wooden floorboards. His cane rolled away, coming to rest near the open doorway of the hidden room where David watched from his chair.
Eleanor stepped out of the haze, her trench coat slightly singed, her sidearm still drawn as she approached Arthur. She looked down at the old man who had stolen her family's legacy thirty years ago.
"It's over, Thomas," Eleanor said, her voice devoid of triumph, carrying only the hollow weight of closure. "The police are securing the perimeter. Federal marshals are en route. You'll spend the rest of your life answering for what you did."
Arthur didn't look up. He stared blankly at the floorboards, his breathing shallow and ragged. "I only wanted to protect him," the old man whispered, lifting a trembling hand toward Mark. "I built this life... so he would never know poverty."
"At the cost of everyone else's truth," Mark said, his voice hard, flat, and devoid of the warmth it had held just an hour ago. He stepped out of the hallway, holding Sarah and Leo close, looking down at the man he had called father his entire life. "You didn't protect us, Dad. You just built a prison out of lies."

Before anyone else could speak, a strange, rhythmic clicking sound echoed from the open hidden room behind Arthur. Everyone froze, turning their heads toward the dark alcove where David sat tied to his chair, a horrifying smile slowly spreading across his face.
