Chapter 4 - The Brass Key

The heavy brass key gleamed dully in the dim light of the hidden room, casting long, wavering shadows across the floorboards. Mark stared at the metal object in his father’s hand, the familiar shape sending a sudden jolt of cold realization through his veins. He had seen that key before—it hung on a decorative hook in Arthur's private study, labeled as a harmless antique from the manor's original construction.

"You knew this room was here," Mark said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a betrayal that cut deeper than any physical wound. "All these years, you told us the house had secrets, but you acted like you were just discovering them with us. You had the key the entire time."

"Mark, listen to me," Arthur pleaded, taking a hesitant step forward, his free hand trembling as he reached out toward his son. "It’s not what you think. Opening this door... it was supposed to stay locked forever. For all our sakes."

"For our sakes?" Sarah barked out a harsh, disbelieving laugh, her eyes flashing with fury. "While this man was locked away in a cage, starving, breathing poisoned air? What kind of monster keeps someone locked in a basement wall?"

"I didn't lock him away!" Arthur shouted back, his voice cracking with sudden, desperate emotion as he slammed the tip of his cane onto the floor. "I saved him! If I hadn't put him behind this wall thirty years ago, the men who were hunting him would have torn this entire family apart piece by piece!"

The captive in the chair let out a wet, mocking laugh, the sound grating like rusted iron. He leaned forward, the ropes groaning, and spat another streak of blood onto the floor near Arthur’s polished shoes.

"Saved me?" the old captive rasped, his voice dripping with venom. "You stole my life, Thomas. You traded my name, my family, and my freedom for this grand estate. You built your entire legacy on top of my silent grave."

Thomas?

Mark staggered backward, his shoulder hitting the rough wooden paneling of the hidden wall. He stared at his father, the man he had known his entire life as Arthur, the gentle patriarch of the family.

"Who is Thomas?" Mark demanded, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Dad... what is your real name?"

May you like

Before Arthur could answer, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the front hallway of the manor, followed by the sound of splintering glass and heavy, purposeful footsteps marching across the foyer.
